His upper body and head movement during defense looks really slick. Is a great footwork necessary to be slick boxer? James Toney also had a similar style to Canelo and his footwork wasn't that great and people call him as a slick boxer. Thoughts?
Toney`s bad footwork hurt him v Jones, but Canelo is a counter/pressure fighter who doesn`t need movement, he`s a come forward fighter with brilliant hand speed and a fantastic counter puncher, Toney was a one trick pony that got exposed by Jones because he couldn`t close the distance at all.
If you put him in with a fast guy with range who is slick, he will not look slick, but I think you have to recognise he has a slick mode that will work against most good boxers. He has the angles, the head movement, the anticipation. He is slick.
He is a low output, front foot, press-forward, pressure counter puncher Higher weight will mean stamina problems and he trains with thermal tape on his knees as he has joint pains now because it is hard maintain this strength and mass when he is a naturally smaller guy. All that explosive weight training will eventually catch up to him. He also looks like a puncher because he is sitting down on his punches now and throwing less but harder shots. He is not punching harder than he was at 160lbs. His shot selection is more selective is all. He cant afford to get into a firefight with a big puncher nor can he outslick someone either by outboxing them for large periods of time. Keep him busy with high output and you'll test his stamina Push him back and he loses his counter punching ability on the front foot Tailor made for Beterbiev. Which is why he was all talk and why they were never serious about fighting Artur.
Kinda hard to keep someone busy when they pressure you and make you miss miss badly, while also countering you. It's not like Beterbiev has never been pushed onto the backfoot . And Beterbiev was offered the fight.
Incorrect From Eddie Hearn's own mouth. The article is 4 days old. Last few paragraphs This content is protected https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.da...follow-eddie-hearn/1lw2usv38jg761hmc0hamuwm2k
he can be. i expect to see that slickness if the beterbiev fight gets made. and maybe in the benavidez one. other than that, i dont see where it would fit the gameplan.
Don't know about him being slick but they way he does business I'd say he was slimey, not the sort you'd sign a contract to fight without reading it thoroughly LOL
