Canelo's popular with certain demographics. Some dislike him because he was made this big star by the media before he really accomplished anything. Also because he's white looking most agree he wouldn't have been a star if he looked like your average Mexican that pisses off some people with good reason.

He's a bit of a teen idol, popular with young girls who think he's cute and generally don't even like boxing.

I think in the last few fights with the exception of the Mayweather fight he's earned respect from most as the real deal. He may not be an amazing fighter but he's good you can't deny it.
