Is Canelo beating GGG a better win than anything on Monzons resume?

    Hmm, food for thought...

I had Monzon up by a couple of rounds at the end of the second fight but it was very competitive. The first fight was a much clearer win for Monzon, although there was the obvious mitigating explanation for Valdez's performance in that one as you mentioned.

To go back to the original thread idea though, I don't think it's an outlandish claim to say Canelo's win over GGG matches Monzon's best win but I do think Monzon won his biggest fights without controversy whereas Canelo beating GGG is very debatable.

But I need to go back and watch the Canelo-GGG fight, I think. Might rewatch Monzon-Valdez 2 as well to be sure!

As to who was more faded, dunno mate. You're right that Monzon was also past his best, I said so myself earlier in the thread I think. The gunshot, age, arthritis etc. I wasn't using Valdez's deterioration as a stick to beat Monzon, just gauging where it put Valdez as an opponent in comparison to Golovkin who was also faded when he faced Alvarez. Just trying to be unbiased.

I will have to score Monzon - Valdes II. There was never much noise but worth another watch regardless.

That's fair. I was mostly going on the hypothetical if Alvarez had won by a cleaner margin, which he obviously didn't.

I actually do need to rewatch the GGG fights as I don't have cards for them I don't think. I might try to rewatch the Griffith-Monzon fights too. Emile really took Monzon to the wire in the rematch I thought. I remember speaking with him via his adopted son on Facebook and he said that he had bad cramp towards the end of the first fight, which I've seen others mention.

Rewatch the GGG/Canelo fights with no commentary, score them yourself and let us know what you get. I'd be interested in knowing how you break the rounds down and why.

I don't think it was controversial per se John, just close. One of those where it gets taken as a given by many that Monzon won without argument which I've never thought was the case. I think I've scored it once for Monzon by a round and a draw (?) I don't have my old cards any more.

Re: that, the Griffith fights, GGG, Canelo etc, I've always thought that Tiger Vs Griffith was very controversial and that Tiger was hard done by, it caused plenty of talk back in its day but seems again nowadays to just be taken for granted as gospel. I've never thought that Griff did enough to win despite fighting brilliantly and making the bigger man look bad.
