That's true but we're debating not just who is great (which Calzaghe surely is), but who is the greatest SMW of all-time. Citing Calzaghe's "work rate" and "footwork" is fine, but we also need to look at who had the better defense. Clearly Canelo is the more elusive fighter of the two with better defensive skills. Then there's power and punch placement. Clearly Canelo is more heavy handed than Joe was at SMW and is the better puncher. Calzaghe was not known for being a body puncher, or for throwing different types of punches like Canelo.

Calzaghe did have fast feet, faster feet than Canelo, but Canelo has better timing with his upper body movement and is a better counter puncher than Joe was. When we talk about who is the greatest, we can't limit our comparisons to certain aspects of a boxer. Work rate isn't a representation of skills, often it's a way for less skilled fighters to compete against higher skilled fighters. Canelo has a better skill set than Calzaghe, when it comes to defense, elusiveness, punch resistance, punching power, etc. And Calzaghe being knocked down by journeymen like he was at SMW has to factor in to who is the greatest at that weight.

Cause Calzaghe came forward throwing more punches than those two, he had a far better, longer jab than Canelo.

Who was a more effective puncher? Canelo or Calzaghe?
    Who had better defense?
    Who had better punch resistance?
