This would be the first unification bout in nearly 10 years, now it's no longer at BoxRec. Is it called off or something? I don't trust Boxrec 100% but i also read a recent thread about Ibragimov vs Holyfield, so i think i'm missing something here.
i too wanted a unification bout...but you know what?? if holyfield wins that fifth title, in russia, it will be a very good " rocky" like story.... its not that i rather see a holyfield vs. ibragimov over the chagaev fight... BUT i rather see Holyfield win a 5th world title, so he better.... im a lil worried but i think holy can pull it off..
Holy can pull it? Only if u mean a strain...Another easy win for Ibragimov. Im dissapointed that this fight was called off, but considering that Chagaev and Ibragimov just won their fights I never understood how is it that they were going to get another belt fight so fast. Two more fights for each seems reasonable before they go for another.
I'm revolted at this turn of events. Enough to make me abandon the heavyweight division for dead and focus on the welters and supermiddles.
Yes, it is laughable to have this monumental fight called off so fast, and SO FAR ahead of its date, after all the hype and bragging they did for putting the fight together. Rediculous and laughable. :-(
Damn man that sucks, i was really looking forward to this fight. I would be lying if i said i wasn't curious about how Holyfield does against a top10 contender, but i don't give him much chance against Ibragimov. He barely got by an unmotivated Oquendo.
If Holyfield wins, this will be a far bigger plus for boxing than many realize - it will be a feel-good story, similar to Foreman winning the title in the 90s. It will also generate a LOT more mainstream attention for boxing than a Ibragimov-Chagaev match would have. Of course, there's also the risk he'll be badly beaten, which would be a real setback for the sport. Personally, I think Holyfield has a darn good shot of winning, much better than many give him. I am not at all sold on Sultan - if somebody like Ray Austin could put him on the canvas and hold him to a draw, an ATG, even a faded one like Holyfield, has a solid shot of beaing this guy.
I really don't think he has much of a shot, don't judge Sultan by his Austin fight, he was out of shape and not motivaded, I guarantee that has changed and he will win an easy UD or late tko
Yes, it is off. Chagaev is ill and Ibragimov will now fight Holyfield. If Holyfield defeats Ibragimov it will be an amazing accomplishment, but IMO the historians will remember Foreman's win over Moorer as a greater win, because he won not only an ABC belt, but the Lineal Title.
Yes, and Foreman beat Moorer with a clean KO, in which he couldn't get up. I imagine if Holy beats Ibrag (likely), it'll be by questionable and close decision. And Ibrag is not really a champion, he's merely a titleholder, and the least of the four, at that. But if Holy can somehow pound Ibrag around the ring, and drop him a time or two in the process, it'd be a much more noteworthy feat, in my opinion. But, a win is a win, and if Holy can manage to win, it will be impressive. Gotta admit that, even though I think someone's palm was greased to get Holy in there, a fight he clearly didn't deserve.
What irrates me about this sport is that you have Wlad he has a belt, wants to unify and Sultan get's to fight a 44 yr old holy, so that means Ruslan-Wlad could be made..when ruslan is healthy......but we know that won't happen, so now Wlad is a champ and can't find a good fight.... I'm not going to start a MMA-Boxing pissing contest but in the UFC the best has to fight who they tell him to, which is usually a deserving contender, the fighter doesn't get to choose who he wants to fight or some "mandatory" who is usually a pay off, ex- Austin becomes mandatory after King payed off the IBF. so question is who in the **** will Wlad fight next, because no one is going to unify with him anytime soon.....it seems
Yeah this has been confirmed for the better part of a week. What I'm not clear on is, will Ruslan be taking on the winner to unify, or will there need to be mandatory fights before then?
Considering how Sultan's promoter took the opportunity to completely trash Chagaev and his profile, I doubt it. Otherwise it's the bone-headed move of the year to blow big credibility holes in your next potential opponent.
