I'm trying to figure why people call him a bum. He's only has one loss and that to Manny Pacquaio.

He beaten Ruslan, Taylor and countless others.

So my question is Chris Algieri an elite fighter or a bum?

Good fighter, he definitely isn't an elite.

somewhere in the middle. He isn't terribly exceptional at anything, kind of a big, dopey guy who has a solid jab, but no stopping power or any amount of slickness to keep a guy really determined off of him.

    :yep

Whilst he is by no means elite, he is far away from being a bum!!

He has his flaws, but as a former JWW champion who beat Ruslan, he is obviously a world class JWW.... And he is definitely a tough s.o. b!!!

That said, his flaws (particularly his lack of punch power) do make him far more vulnerable at WW.

He will probably end up a fringe contender/gatekeeper (consistently ranked 11-20 at 147) but not a bona fide WW world title contender.

Of course it is entirely possible that he gets a shot! The WW division is going to be in flux soon with several people holding a portion of the crown... and boxing politics being as it is could lead to a champion using him as a voluntary defence. But unless you're a fan or a member of his family you'd be very disappointed with the state of the division if he were ever able to win a genuine world title at WW.

He is neither elite nor a bum. He's basically a fringe world class contender that was fortunate enough to get a shot against a guy who had very obvious limitations on skills, and he eeked out a debatable decision against him and parlayed it into a huge fight where his own limitations were badly exposed. As they will also likely be against Khan.

Ahoy matey! I'd favor Frankie. Gavin's nothing like the bum people are making him out to be.

    What's your take?

Algieri has talent but hes not an elite fighter. He also surrounds himself with a highly amateurish team, further diminishing his chances at world level.
