He didnt even fight any of the best middleweights/super-middleweights from his era how can he be a top 100 ATG? James Toney yes, Mike McCallum yes, Sumbu Kalambay maybe, Chris Eubank no. Eubank's a great British boxer and he had some great fights against domestic/Irish opposition but he never made the leap to the top fighters.
No. But he was brilliant in the UK. He was THE man in UK boxing in the very late 80's and early 90's. He was hated at the start and loved at the end. A true transformation. Dual WBO champion, will be remembered for the first battle with Benn, the excellent competitive fights with Watson and Collins and the titanic struggles with Carl Thompson. Had the guts to face Calzaghe and did reasonably well. Without a doubt, in his 168lbs prime he would have handled Froch no problems.
Eubank beat better fighters than Calzaghe, but Calzaghe was the 100% world champion after beating Lacy and Kessler. Eubank only a 25% champ. Benn, Watson in '91, Malinga at the start of '92, Rocchigiani at the start of '94, were all at their very best. Benn, between his Watson and McClellan fights... Watson, getting better with each fight - wasn't ring-rusty prior to Eubank fights as he was prior to McCallum fight... Henry Wharton, froze against Benn but was on fire against Eubank - never the same after Eubank fight... Also Lindell Holmes and Tony Thornton were hardly slouches - I rate them way over Charles Brewer and Byron Mitchell. Ofcourse Graciano Rocchigiani was about two levels above Mario Veit as an operator. I rate Rocky over Kessler, too.
fair point. for what its worth, i rate ike williams as the 2nd best lightweight of all time (maybe a stretch but he's certainly top 5) and any win over him, especially a knockout win, rates pretty high
Don't know about Sumbu Kalambay. McCallum for sure being a three-weight world champ of the major titles and avenging the Kalambay defeat, drawing Toney.
Lopez is funny because I can understand a lot of different spots on the ATG list. Even being put on a very short list, and I'd always accept the explanation ''Dude, it's Ricardo Lopez.'' as valid.
People who don't think he's an ATG are adamant about it People who do, seem to put him highly Love him or hate him Theres only one Chris Eubank
