is cortez "fair but firm" or, as described by john chavez of Boxing confidential - "a long-time, over-the-hill, ten years past his prime, blunder-filled referee"???
He made a huge error in the Soto fight, but I still regard him as a good referee. I thought he did an excellent job in the Hopkins/Calzaghe fight and I also thought he did a good job in the Mayweather/Hatton fight.
Was. But he need's to turn his "Big Fight" card in. (PPV's & Pay Cable) WNF's, FNF's, Solo Boxeo, Vs. ect...the retirement home of boxing. (And no more BIG Championship fight's)
Ironically it was during another JMM fight(jmm/Norwood) were COrtez made another major blunder, that may have cost Marquez the fight!
how can you say he did good in both fights. it was like 2 different referees. with hatton/mayweather he would split them straight away, deducted a point from hatton for hitting mayweather when mayweather was clearly using illegal ducking techniques. floyd's illegal use of the elbow and ducking below the waistline throughout the fight was ignored. with calzaghe/hopkins he reversed his refereeing style to allow hopkins to use the same 'hit and hold' technique (as Hatton in the Undefeated fight) for virtually the whole fight. let hopkins rest from a supposed low blow by calzaghe and allowed hopkins to lead with his head on numerous occasions (even once inoring a blatent purposeful headbutt).
