The Ring magazine recently had an article in which they basically said that Cottos isnt yet a hall of famer, that a win against Foreman wont do anything for his legacy. Considering his entire career to this point- is Cotto a hall of famer??

i personally think the criteria for getting in is a lot harder on current fighters than what it was in the past, - than what does that say of the era? the man has titles in two classes, and his only two losses were against a possible cheater- and the p4p king, he has beaten elite unbeaten fighters , as well as respected veterans. Is the hall of fame a bit hard on modern guys?? The same article says that Trinidad and Tzsyu are cusp guys along with Oscar. And this isnt just anybody- this is noted historian Bert Sugar.

Its always hard to judge a career before it has finished- but i think as of now- Cotto deserves to get in. without the Mosley victory perhaps not, but i think that fight puts him in , If Floyd gets credit for beating Shane- then what of Cottos- nobody mentions that he beat him first?!

anyway, interested to see how people think of his Hall of fame credentials here.

HOFamer Carlos Zarate is No.49 on Bert Sugar's ATG list (Thomas Hearns is No. 50 )

    66 fights:
22 "boxers" with 0 fights before they met Zarate.
11 "boxers" had 0 wins and multiple losses.
    +many others with atrocious records
Defended his title 8 times(sometimes against the likes of Emilio Hernandez 2-3, Kpalogo 1-4 etc.)
Several good wins (Zamora, Martinez, Davila) and several decent ones.
Never rated as the man in his division according to the Ring. He was No.2 in 1976,1977 and No.3 during his reign as WBC titleholder!

Most pre-1980s boxers are overrated to some extent.

Even with a win over Foreman and claiming a third title in 3 divisions I would subjectively say no.

However if he does beat Foreman and goes on to beat hypejob Williams and one or more 2 elite names then hes in. But first he has to get by Foreman.

Bert Suger is the wrong person to be analysing any of todays fighters, that guy imo is hard to take seriously sometimes with some of the crap he says. Alright, so hes been around boxing for a long time, fine.... i give him his due as a relic of boxing i guess, but that doesnt mean hes a quality source for an opinion on current affairs, and also hes even called out for his bias against todays fighters by other respected journalists.

anyways, as for Cotto.... the thing is, i personally have no clue anymore what the hell the standard is for getting into the HOF. That crap is too subjective, and is poorly done IMO.

There seems to be almost no consistancy to who gets in or left out.

Yes, especially if he wins Saturday night. Two weight division champion(might be three soon) and always fights the best. He has done way more already than many who don't even deserve to be in the HOF. Please don't tell me Micky "tomato can" Ward is in there.

My left nut could get into the boxing hall of fame so Cotto certainly belongs in there.

Two weight...possible three weight World champion with a very good resume...avoided nobody (not including Arum not willing to throw him in with Mayweather). And his only two losses came against the P4P#1, and Margarito (controversial).

I'd say yes...if he gets past Foreman and puts another couple top names on that resume...it will only further cement his place as a future HoF'er.

HOF is not really an exclusive club. I probably have Cotto there already.

cotto has endeared himself to mainstream boxing fans with his no fear attitude and good guy persona. with a victory over foreman and a distinction of being a 3-division champ, cotto might gain favorable consideration..

although currently, most boxing fans would probably raise their eyebrows on the prospects of cotto being considered HOF worthy, i'm pretty sure history will judge his case accordingly and justly. He just might...

I'm sure there's boxer who've achieved less than Cotto that are already in the HOF so having Cotto in there wouldn't be a crime whether he beats Foreman or not. Hell if he beats Foreman he's sealed to be in there though.
