Now we're at the point that boxing writers are making the statement that "...Cotto is considered a small Welterweight..." I don't remember reading or hearing much of that during the time when Cotto was manhandling Carlos Quintana, yanking Shane Mosley around the ring by casually shifting his weight, or making Judah look like a "..small dog or something.." Can it accurately be said that Cotto is a small Welterweight?
I think he has filled out nicely there...I would say he is an average size or maybe slightly below average. Its just Margarito is a massive welter...As is Clottey, Cintron and Williams. He also isnt as physically dominant in comparison to his earlier 140 work....I think he fits in better there then a guy like Hatton but not quite as well as someone like Mayweather.
Nobody really was saying how a small heavyweight Mike Tyson was when he was cleaning out the division back in the late 1980's.
He was drained at 140, and he is so powerful at 147... Guys like Margarito and PW just make him seem like a small WW.... but thats because they are just huge .....
Rewatch Zudah/Cotto...before the fight, Lampley and Merchant say that Cotto is a small welterweight but that it hasn't been a problem yet because he hasn't faced a welterweight with a massive size advantage over him yet. Lampley even warned about it happening against a guy like Margarito or such. They discuss it during the tale of the tape.
Do you guys think that the welterweight divison. through the years, has had the biggest improvements in average, natural body size/proportions? Because of diet, genetics, etc. They're kinda long, lanky, middleweight sized now. I compare this to basketball. The small forward position (usually the most talented, most athletic and most versatile man in the team) has increasingly gone bigger and bigger through the years, compared to all the other basketball positions. And they still retained all the attributes of a natural small forward. The position used to have 6'4 to 6'6 tall guys. Now, it isnt uncommon to see 6'8 to 7'0 tall guys playing the position. But the average sizes of the other basketball positions remained more or less the same. Pointguards: under 6 feet to 6'4 Shooting guards: 6'4 to 6'7 Small forwards: 6'5 to 7'0 Big forwards: 6'8 to 7'0 Centers: 6'10 to 7'2 (Guys 7'4 to 7'7 tall are very rare) Sorry if that doesnt make too much sense.
I have Cotto as medium sized. One of the best Welterweights without question, but in terms of size he is average.
He is powerfull but he is obviously smaller. Margarito, Williams, Trinidad, DelaHoya, they are all at least three inches taller than Cotto. Even Mosley is 2 inches taller than Cotto
