He might be a medium sized, if not slightly small welterweight. He fought must of his career at jr welterweight so no he is not a natural welterweight. He can make it rather comfortable and can come in a couple pounds lighter. I also don't think he can handle welterweight power as good as Margarito, Clottey, Mosley, or Williams. If he was a natural welterweight then it would not sound stupid to do a catch weight fight with Winky Wright, James Kirkland, or even Williams. Does anybody see what I'm saying. Weight drained or not, Torres and Corley hurt Cotto, so what would Angulo or Kirkland do. Not a pretty sight. Cotto is a great fighter and he can fight @ welterweight because he has decent speed, good enough power, and most importantly the skill to fight at that weight.
I do think Cotto is small for a welterweight. Williams, Margarito, Clottey, even Cintron. Trinidad, De La Hoya back in the day. Cotto is small compared to these guys, and they are all natural ww's. Cotto was fine fighting Judah (small for ww) and Mosley (started as a lw), but against big ww's Cotto is small by comparison, yes.
he's small...in the same boat as Judah, too big for 140 and has the disadvantage of size at 147 he's very strong for his size but, cant be compared to the big WW's that are 5'11, 6'0, 6'1 etc.....in fact i would even say he's average size, to me that would be 5'8, or 5'9'ish
IMV, Cotto is a clearly a big Welterweight. He comes in weighing as much as the supposedly 'massive' Margarito doesn't he? Emanuel Steward was talking about how he was "..physically much stronger.." than Shane Mosley, and Shane has a reputation for being one of the strongest fighters in the sport pound for pound. This isn't just a Welterweight who comes in weighing sometimes close to 170 pounds of lean athletic muscle, he's also one of the most physically powerful fighters in the division by far.
He looked like he was about to die on them scales @ 140, especially against Torres.. 147 is where he's at, period.
