Physically Cotto shouldn't be too damaged. He didn't take a ton of clean shots. Mentally, now that is the question. When he went into the ring he looked 10 feet tall. When he walked out he looked like he was about 5'3.
Was nothing like that, Cotto dominated the first half of this fight, an epic fight between two very good fighters, he will comeback, credit to both, have respect for them.
My intention wasn't to say that the fights unfolded in a similar matter. I'm merely pointing out fighters who weren't the same after their first loss.
Didn't he have an eye problem? I think your under-estimating Cotto's mental toughness. He wents to fight again before the end of the year. I think he's got his heart set on the rematch.
yeah if cotto was finished due to this fight if thats the type of fighter he is..he would not have made it out of the torress fight ... cotto isnt a man to be toyed with ...he will be back the better question is...are YOU finished with this lame ass thread
Cotto had an eye problem as well(at least he did by the end of the fight.) I'm not saying Cotto is finished. I'm just throwing out some examples.
You guys are underestimating the psychological damage. If Margarito just sparked him out of there then I'd say no problem, Cotto would rebound. He could always chalk it up to luck or just wrong place wrong time. But you have to have serious concern for the way it all unfolded. Margarito was like a nightmare. He ate every punch and just retaliated with a smile. Cotto by the time the fight ended voluntarily took a knee. And did not object to the stoppage. He was thoroughly beaten, not just physically but mentally as well. Now it wasn't domination like Calzaghe-Lacy, but there was a domination of willpower and just sheer physical ability. Like a woman who beats the crap out of a man who is inevitably going to **** her. It leaves a scar that doesn't go away. I for one hope it has no effect on Cotto but I'd be lying to myself if I denied the possiblity.
But so did Lacy: “I want all my fans to know I’m back and I’m fresh and better then ever before so you don’t want to miss what I’ve been missing for some months now. One or two fights back and I want a rematch with Joe Calzaghe! He won the first fight and I just know I let a lot of my fans down. I want my titles back and I’m not going to stop until I do! On March 3rd Joe didn’t even fight 30 percent of me that night. He had to do what he had to do. It’s funny that a fighter can’t say timeout, I’m not up to this tonight and ask to fight when you’re up to it. Someone has to win and he did that. Now I’m fresh and ready to return and get what I really know I should have gotten the first time out. I want Joe again and I won’t let my fans down in doing so.” J. Lacy, 2006 The parallels are striking!
1 Lacy is a crapper fighter than Cotto 2 Lacy doesn't have the heart of Cotto 3 Lacy take more of a pasting than Cotto. This fight was more competitive. 4 Lacy had a shoulder problem, unlike Cotto.
