Normally no. But I don't think Cotto wants to actually campaign at 160. I think he is fighting Martinez because he thinks like a lot of people that Sergio has looked ripe for the pickings the last couple fights. It's a gamble though because if the rest has done Sergio well and he isn't truly shot, Cotto is in for a world of hurt.

While Cotto is a fighters fighter he waited for Sergio to show clear signs of decline before he elected to fight him. He didn't want to have non of prime Sergio.

No doubt. But it looks like Freddie is a big factor here too. Without Freddie convincing him they could do it together, I'd be surprised if Cotto would have done it.

The opportunity wouldnt be there forever Martinez is on his way out

After he loses to Martinez I think Cotto could beat Alvarez then he should retire and go out on a win

If he makes that $25mil for fighting them 2 in his last fights thats a good way to go out

    Rodriguez was the tune-up...
Dudes like Cotto no longer can afford to waste a fight.

Dont think so, can see Canelo winning every round but he will get with hard left hooks and eventually one will rock him badly and he gets stopped between rounds 8-10

Cotto weighed 160 for the Corely fight in 2005 when he was JR. lightweight and was almost stopped. He has always been a middleweight fighting at an extremely low weight.

Still he probably would have been well served to take a few tune ups at 160 to see what he feels like but, at this point in his career it is superfights for big money and nothing else.

I did not see Cotto's bout against Trout but he does fair/well/excellent against boxers. Judah, Mayweather, Paulie M. Mosely etc.

This is actually a bout I want to see.

It's a shame. A while back people were calling him stupid for taking less money to fight Martinez instead of taking the money to fight Canelo.

I agree, it's called BALLS. It's called BEING THE BEST.

Sadly, Cotto isn't beating Martinez. How Martinez is only a -225 favorite is shocking. I would bet on him all day. Cotto will not be able to hurt him.

    Martinez by KO, rounds 10-12.

DLH loss every big fight he's been in, started his career at 130 lbs, was the golden goose of the sport, moving up to fight him was more reward than risk.

Cotto had not proved anything at 153 yet blew away Foreman.
He also had done jack **** at WW jet beat Quintana for a vacant belt.

Yes, those are not Martinez calibre fighters but lets not forget that Cotto beat Bailey, Mosley, Judah, Corley, Malignaggi, Torres, Quintana, Clottey, Foreman and Rodriguez.
Some of those wins were brutal destruction’s, something other fighters could not deliver.

A solid resume with a huge fan base and years of dedication. He got the shot and he deserves it.

No, he'll make a good chunk of change, might even win (though I doubt it).

You guys act like Martinez is a huge MW, or even a career MW. He is a 154 fighter that should not be too far off for Cotto to handle.
