I really believe that Crolla lacked any belief in himself against Sykes, he looked ok in the first but as soon as Sykes put pressure on him he seemed to go into a shell and not really want to put any pressure on Sykes. At times he looked like he did not really want to be in there, and to those who say the Prizefighter results don't matter I believe that if that fight with Sykes had been over a longer distance he may have been stopped again. I don't know if there is something going on mentally with Crolla or maybe he is being involved in sparring wars in the gym but something isn't right, he is quite a good pressure fighter but he was trying too hard to box yesterday even in the first fight. If it is not mental or hard sparing then it could be that Gallagher is trying to change his style too quick and Crolla isn't taking it in yet. I'd like to see Crolla have a couple of confidence building fights that would give him the chance to work on any changes to his style that are being worked on, I'd also like him to make his mind about his weight issue, I'm sure him or Gallagher have said he could still do Super Feather, if so I think he'd be better boxing at that weight where he would have a better size advantage.
Typical British style, upright and hittable with no head movement. I do not no why the emphasis is on parrying and blocking in this country as opposed to slipping, ducking and bending at the waist which minimises contact.
No Crulla aint going beyond domestic level, but he'll be in some entertaining fights along the way. I'd love to see a proper rematch with sykes, who i thought won the final.
It's just not the established style. Trainers over here would benefit from spending time with other trainers internationally to see what they can use. Blocking and parrying is a good tactic if you've not got great anticipation or are slower of hand and foot. It keeps you in position to punch with or back at an opponent while minimising clean contact. But, IMO, every fighter should have a few different looks available to them, just in case one style isn't working. The sad thing is Crolla has some nice moves, he can duck and weave, and he can slip shots. But Gallagher is just removing those wrinkles one by one and he's less fluid as a result. he's not a lost cause, but he needs to rethink his approach to training.
With so many fighters to train im not sure joe g has the time to sort out the technical flaws his fighters have.
totally agree as you step up Levels people hit and move better so walking straight forward to apply pressure by taking punches catches up with you
:deal This defo, i don't think Ant is strong enough at lightweight, Sykes look so much bigger than him last night. Was gutted to see him lose Would love to see him back down at 130 where im sure he will fulfill his potential.
IMO The Matthews Stoppage was poor and thats just one fight. Crolla is not a 3 round fighter hes good over the stretch due to his bodywork and engine plus lack of big power. I wouldn't write him off yet.
He does just have a traditional British amateur converted to pro style. There are some great trainers in the UK but some trainers can only teach one style. Tibbs, The Ingles etc don't feel the need to make their fighters rockem sockem robotic fighters. I truly think Adam Booth is the best trainer for a pro fighter in Britain. He is always great in the corner, he is meticulous in his tactics and is not so pig headed that he just repeats the same **** every camp.
Is this a reference to Burns and Rees being "Euro level"??, not being funny there just difficult to pick your wording? Answer to the question is a pretty emphatic one, Crolla has never really shown anything other than good domestic ability, he's a solid pro, keeps himself in good nick and does have an eye catching skill set But there's no substance in his work, he's not sitting on his shots or looking to cause out n out damage, he's just applying technical principles and looking to box only, not punch and box, it looks great and he's so neat and tidy he's actually a joy to watch, but he's got no pop, and thats because of the style he's fighting
Crolla's got a load of talent and is great to watch, he definitely seems too small for lightweight though. I thought he landed the majority of the better stuff against Sykes, should have won it really.
Crolla is a really good fighter IMO. I just wish he'd get back down to 130 and i'd honestly like to see him away from Gallaghers gym. Not a huge fan of Gallaghers style admittedly but for some of his fighters it works, I just really dont see Ant being one of those fighters.
In a word yes a really nice guy but has found his level Should be looking for a new trainer if he wants to make any future progress. As billc84 says his record of unbeaten fights is balls Against live opponents his tactics are flawed .
