Is cruiserweight the worst division atm?

Yeh good point it was also quite exciting when haye and macrinelli were both undefeated and big punchers but most of the time people who get taken out at light heavy or heavy either move up or down Ala cleverly

 

Perhaps for the British but Macca proved himself to be nothing more than a Euro level fighter and its arguably Haye's 2nd best CW victory.

Cleverly and Bellew are going to fail miserably at CW and it should be particularly brutal for Clev if he faces Makabu which is rumored. It won't do anything towards proving the divisions worth though just like Mchunu's schooling of Chambers or Huck's performance against Povetkin since people have an unexplainable irrational bias against it. Didn't matter whether it was Holyfield, Gomez, Jirov, Toney, USS, Adamek or the current crop people ignore them. Truely odd.

Going by this thread it's clear that CW is a very underrated weightclass at present. Noone outstanding but many good fighters. Troy Ross is a loss to the division though.

LW right now is horrific. HW is not as bad as people say.

 

Juan Carlos Gomez, forgot about him for a while, great cruiserweight.

A hypothetical fight between JCG and Holyfield at junior heavyweight is interesting. Both of them very skilled and while at jr. heavyweight JCG was always in shape.

I wouldn't be surprised if Beterbiev moves up to junior heavyweight within a year and a half. He's sort of like Kovalev, heavy handed enough to be a two division threat. I don't know if their managers would be for them campaigning in LHW and Jr. Hvy at the same time but in theory that would double their chances for title fights and could make for some interesting catchweight fights.

 

looks like a good division to me. I don't see the attraction of watching guys smaller than anorexic chicks slap each other for twelve rounds, personally.

 

Agree, Usyk at cruiser is going to be a challenge for everyone there.

 

CW has the potential to be really hot. The talent is there. What the dicision needs is more unification fights and more hype.

 

Sadly, it's pretty much ignored by the American boxing media.

Many of the most entertaining fights I've seen during the past ten years have been at cruiserweight. There's LOTS of talent there.

They should try putting a cruiserweight fight or two on HBO this year.

 

I can see 2014 being a great year for the cruisers. Plenty of great fighters there but I get the impression some fighters get impatient and head for the money one division higher.

Huck v Arslan should be a good fight to start the year off on January 25th. Two fighters that like to get stuck in. Can't wait.

 

I'm not sure if this is true. I think the talent is distinctly average but what makes the division interesting is that it's pretty competitive. There's no A level boxers around but tons of second tier boxers like Huck, Hernandez, Arslan, Lebedev, Jones, Wlod, Mchunu, Afolabi, Drozd and so forth. None of these guys is particularly outstanding but the playing field is even which makes for interesting match ups because more often than not, you cannot predict the winner. Also, most of these guys happen to hit pretty hard which spices up things as well.

I agree that it's better than HW and a few underpopulated low weight classes but it's pretty far off of any division between 135-175 in terms of talent.

 

Beterbiev is supposed to be a light heavyweight but looking at his fighting weight listed on box records, he's pretty much been over 175lbs for all his professional fights. I think in one fight he was 184lbs and he didn't look like he had much excess weight to sacrifice.

 

That was his debut,usually in the early fights of a fighters career there isnt a huge demand to make weight and they can agree to fight a few pounds above the weight limit, Beterbiev is a monster at light heavyweight and he would be well advised to stay there for the time being. An example of this is Mikey Garcia his debut in 2006 at 18 he weighed 131 pounds but in 2013 aged 26 he won a title at 126 pounds.
