Mark Johnson is a 1st ballot HOF in my opinion and very underrated, Many seem to forget that his losses at bantam were at the tail end of his career. In his prime he was on every ones PFP list and for a long time his career lasted a long time and i honestly believe that in a HTH matchup no flyweight in history would have beat him. Johnson is head and shoulders above those guys you mentioned and would have whupped Darchinyan in his prime.
only ATG fighters are first ballot HOFers. I do not consider too sharp as an ATG. Imagine Hamed is snobbed twice already.
I chose Borderline HOFer which is what most of you voted for. Darchinyan has a record of 34W-2L-1D (37 fights total) which is not bad. But I think he should fight 10 more times against B or higher fighters, and win championship belts especially at a higher weight class, to cement himself into the HOF.
Maybe I'm a little bit too harsh on Darchinyan. Give me 6 more good fights Vic with B or higher fighters, and I think I can pass him into the HOF. Darchinyan doesn't even have to go up in weight, and I'll pass him in my book. This is a very doable task that can be done in 2 to 3 years time. I think Darchinyan was probably going to retire sometime in the next 2 to 3 years anyways since he is 34 years old.
6 more good fights? You have gotta be kidding right?? You want him to move up to heavyweight and fight the Klitschko's too before considering him?!??? The guy has done more than a lot of people in the HOF already. Becoming the first person EVER to unify the SFW division should be a great enough achievement already.
I'm with the sexed up panda. 1st fighter to unify the SFW division & beat Mijares with ease, who was the man at the time to beat & in everyone's p4p top 10. People shouldn't let Vic's cocky personality overwrite his achievements.
That's why I consider him to be borderline HOFer. It's a great accomplishment that he is the first to unify the SFW division, but that alone isn't enough to justify HOFer status. Yes, I agree that Darchinyan perhaps has done more than some of the people in the HOF, but we can look at it two ways. We either pick the worst HOF member who is perhaps undeserving of the honor, and compare every future inductee to him, or we can revise the HOF standards, and choose more appropriate members. If we go by the former, then Darchinyan is in, and so is about a 100 other people. If we go by the latter standards, then Darchinyan may make the cut already, but he's at the border. All I'm saying is if Darchinyan wins 6 more fights against B or better boxers, then he has a much better chance of getting into the HOF, and with less criticism from boxing aficianados. You don't want people saying "Well, Darchinyan got in, so should my fav fighter". One point of criticism of Darchinyan's resume is that he has only fought 37 fights. Many average boxers and great boxers today fight over 45 fights.
Fair enough on the first part of your post. As for your comment about only having fought 37 fights, this is irrelevant. It's about quality not quantity. So many fighters these days simply pad out their records by fighting tomato cans, that it really doesn't mean anything to have accumulated a lot of fights. It's all about the number of "quality" opposition you have fought over the course of your career. Look at guys like Jesus Chavez and Zsolt Eridei who have records of 41-0 and 31-0 respectively by exclusively fighting human corpses over their career. Are they considered in anyone's P4P's lists at the moment??? Hell no. Then you look at someone like Kostya Tszyu who was fighting former world champions like Juan La Porte in his 4th pro fight, and pretty much fought tough opposition his entire career. The guy finished with a record of (31-2-1) and deservedly should be considered an all time great, and certain HOF'er given the quality of opponents faced in his era. In my mind, Vic has fought enough great boxers over his career to justify his status, and with his achievements capturing titles in multiple weight divisions and unification titles deserves the accolades.
I wouldn't be outraged or anything if he got in, but I'd be much more comfortable if he avenged a loss, won a title at bantam or made several more solid defenses at super fly. Any one of those three things would be fair, I think. He is, as many have said, the first and only to unify at super fly, a two division world champion, a winner of many title fights and I think the first Armenian born world champion. Now the last thing isn't an accomplishment in the strictest sense but firsts make you noteworthy. He's also a former Olympian and he's done his damnedest to take on all comers and go after big challenges with mostly success. You can't take that away from him. And both of his losses showed him rebounding strong, which I think is a trait that indicates a fighter is great. Also, since it's a hall of "fame", the fact that he's made himself exciting for the fans and therefor good for the sport and had so many television appearances does add to the case. For a flyweight/super flyweight to be as well known this day and age is something else.
Kostya Tszyu is a great example of a boxer who should get into the HOF based on quality vs. quantity. He only had 33 fights in his career (31W-2L), but arguably his career is HOF worthy. But points of criticism are just that, they are points of criticism. Tszyu's quantity of fights is below average compared to those who get into the HOF, and that is a point of criticism, but he still should get into the HOF, because he makes up for it with the quality of his fights, and this may be the case for Darchinyan as well especially if he were to stop fighting now. It's the total package that counts. Not every HOFer's resume is going to be strong in every aspect, but if the overall resume is strong despite some weaknesses, then that's okay in my book. As long as Darchinyan keeps on fighting and winning, it can only add to his wonderful resume.
Needs to have a signature fight(super fight). He has had 3 so far.He has had 3 legendary wars non of which are fight of the year by any means. He beat Mijares. He beat Arce. He beat Rojas.KO of the year candidate? Fighter of the year at 115, possibly.I'm sick of the bS.There needs to be a super fight with Montiel or Hasegawa, those are blockbusters that is sure to give him the HOF status, instead of fighting power puffs at one one five, come and get some Elite 115-118 killers like Montiel and Hasegawa?Same with Bumnito when is he going to be in a super fight? with Montiel or Hasegawa? I know he is chasing that one so hopefully it happens.
Borderline. One more good win (Nonito / Hasegawa / Perez) or 5 or 6 more decent wins (defenses against the level of guy he's been fighting, or claiming a belt at 118 off a lesser fighter) probably seals it. He's a step behind someone like Nas for me though. If I had a vote, I'd vote for Nas, but he ain't in yet.
