I shouldn't knock it because beating a ageing version of Mcormeck (the boxer you mock there) is Hayes only real claim to fame.
He's only had two, maybe 3 good wins if we include Fragomeni who should fight Kraj for the vacant title. However, he did it in good fashion and is quite a proposition with his size, speed and power in this division. For longevity a few rank above him though. Holyfield is a no brainer, Gomez and De Leon deserve to be above him. He's there or there abouts though.
i admit he did fight an ageing mormeck and that has to be taken into consideration but i wrekon mormeck would beat any cruiser out there right now bar adameck
Some of the wins earlier in his career shouldn't be overlooked either. Gurov and Rossitto in particular were more than credible opposition, especially for a fighter with well under 20 fights at the time he fought them.
thats bang on everyone now to be the man you gotta beat the man and the man was mormeck who had two titles who he had taken of o'neil bell
Holyfied yes and qawi and gomez but **** off toney or jirov :rofl :rofl Jirov was a title holder no unification, toney had one title fight beating the aforementioned jirov. Even Gomez was only a wbc champion ffs, Ok johnny nelson was wbo champ for 6 years who cares. You guys have a warped vision on anything to do with haye, you want to grow up your like kids.
i voted too early to tell - but i don't agree that Wlad will send him back down. He may not beat Wlad but he'll settle very nicely into the division and will surprise a lot of people. i think he can take every1 except wlad.
Haye is a great cruiser, but before moving up to heavyweight, he should have fought Cunningham and Bell.
thats bang on that is, nelson was champ for 6 YEARS!!! longetivity kiss my ass, its all about domination over the current cruiserweight top guys and haye done it
For a brand new poster, you sure seem to have assessed what you think about how people feel about Toney rather quickly......and he's been mentioned little in this thread. ...I don't think most would call James a Top 5 All Time Cruiser, unless you are talking head to head...which may be what is going on with Haye here. He may be getting the approval of some based on a hypothetical head to head match up with others...It surely can't be his beating Mormeck and Mac and leaving...:huh
it would have been good for the division but, as Haye's exposure grew, it was a good time to move up. gettin that HW money.
I like Toney and if we were talking top 5 cruiserweights skill level then toney obviously miles above haye but we are talking actual achivements here. To unify in 22 fights losing 1 and koing 20 in the process, and also picking up the european title in only his 16th fight is something special. :good
That's not what it is all about. It is not all about domination over the current cruisers...it is about where Haye ranks all time. Also, he fought Mormeck and Mac and left...that is not dominating a division. He won the titles, but he did not become a fighting champion. If Haye is an ALL TIME Top 5 Cruiser, it is more an indictment of the division, than a reflection of Haye's accomplishments there in back to back fights.
It's not about the money. In order to establish himself as an all time great at cruiser, he needed to clean out the division completely. And he failed to do that.
