Starting this thread on the back of the Calzaghe next fight thread. Most people want to see him fight Dawson next which is fair enough. That aside though, is Dawson proven at the top level? Yeah, he has beaten Tarver and Johnson, but come on.... surely a fight with Hopkins would be sensible if he is really as good as people are saying.

Hopkins is a very good yardstick for fighters and I've love Dawson to fight him. I feel Dawson is a top fighter and will find a way to beat most people apart from the very canny, eg. Calz/Hopkins. I'd say Dawson beats Kessler, Froch, Pav, Williams etc.

Not proven enough to be worthy of taking on Calzaghe just yet & by the time he is/or if he ever is then it will probably be to late as Joe will be sitting comfy in his retirement. People in the USA have a big thing against Joe which wont go untill he loses the '0' and even then they probably wont drop it. I still don't feel that Dawson has done enough to warrant a fight with Calzaghe, he hasn't impressed me. I've seen that he has power which I've stated in a previous thread, but nothing Calzaghe can't candle who in turn I feel has quite good punc resistance. He's been down yes, but he's always gotten up.

If a fight with Hopkins is sensible, why is a fight with Calzaghe not sensible? :huh

I'm not saying it isn't, but Hopkins is a good test, and if he can come through that then it would mean bigger money which might make Calzaghe more interested in postponing his retirement.

He's more proven at 175 than Calzaghe himself is, that's for sure. Joe obviously has greater credentials overall, but Dawson has wins over three top-five opponents in the division.

I'd still favor Calzaghe over Dawson 65/35 in Europe, but I think it's close to a pick'em fight in the US.

Yeah he's proven he's a two time champ at 175. What more does he need to do?

Exactly. If he's not considered "proven" enough for a big fight, then very few boxers are.

You're comparing Dawson's career to Jones'? 'Proven' is past tense and Dawson has a long way to go to near half of Jones' achievements.
