Boxrec rankings? Really? Anyway.... Did you check Mundine and Andrade's rankings at SMW in the sources you listed? Each also ranked top six by three of your four sources and rank as number three and four by The Ring, which I feel most would consider the most reputable of those sources. Beyer was also top five at SMW when Kessler fought him.
It's one of 4 different rankings that I provided No one said any of those guys weren't top 10. However, Dawson has taken on the stiffer opposition. The quartet of Johnson, Tarver, Adamek and Harding is better than Kessler's quartet of Mundine, Beyer, Andrade, and Siaca. None of those guys are even relevant in the sport anymore. Well, Andrade is semi relevant. However, that's mostly due to his 12th round performance against Bute. He was getting schooled in the rest of the fight.
I stand corrected. Dawson called him out several times pre-Jones. Hopkins on the other hand is not worth paying any attention to. He calls out opponents just to get in the headlines but then refuses to fight them. He's been using Roy Jones for that purpose for years.
Of course Jones is more proven than Dawson. Problem is that Jones is proven to suck over the past 4 years or so. I can't believe this is even a debate. He's beaten THREE top 5 LHWs. Of course he's proven. Who else could he reasonably prove himself against? The only thing he hasn't done is beaten P4P level fighters, and neither Hopkins nor Calzaghe wants a piece of him.
Hopkins called out Calzaghe and then they signed to fight eachother a few months later. So I don't know what you're talking about there. Roy refused to even negotiate with Hopkins.
I tend to agree. I don't see any great gulf though, I would give it to Dawson by a narrow margin, mainly on the strength of Adamek's recent results.
Yes. Tarver enforced his rematch clause, and since he couldn't get any other big fight, he decided to get the rematch that he was contractually obligated to out of the way.
Booth Calzaghe and Hopkins had been thinking about fighting each other for years. This is nothing new. Jones has said on HBO several times that he has an open invitation to Hopkins to fight with a purse spit of 60/40 in favour of the winner.
hypothetical on the calzaghe v dawson fight who promotes the fight ? which venue is it held in ? how much do you beleive its worth ? what should the split be ?
Considering what an absolute **** job Calzaghe did promoting the Jones fight, I would hope that Shaw promotes this one. Venue should obviously be in the UK, and Calzaghe should get the lion's share of the purse (60-40 or 70-30). How much the fight is worth really depends on where it is, whether HBO picks it up, etc.
Rematch clauses very often have big financial penalties behind them. What people don't understand is that if Dawson had fulfilled his mandatory, and won, facing Tarver would have become a big money unification match. It plain stupid to give away titles, especially against opponents who are so easily beaten. Both Tarver and Diaconu aren't in the same league as Dawson when it comes to talent. If Dawson had done his job as he should have, he wouldn't have to call out Calzaghe, Calzaghe would be calling out him.
I think events have really highlighted what a bad decision it was to dump the title. If Dawson took his career high payday to go to Romania, he would then have been in a position of greater strength to arrange a fight with Tarver, and there would have needed to be no rematch clause. In the same timeframe as fighting Tarver twice, Dawson could have fought Diaconu once and Tarver once, been paid a lot more, have two titles instead of one, gained valuable experience of fighting in front of a hostile crowd and be in a far stronger position to push for a fight with Calzaghe.
Tocker Pudwill to give him his correct name is a have gloves will fight journeyman type of fighter that many consider the worst name on Calzaghe's record and go on about how poor it was of Joe to fight him. The people that go on about Pudwill also seem to like to ignore the facts that he was a very, very late replacement (for the injured Thomas Tate) and he had also fought the other SMW big cheese of the time, Ottke, and taken him to points. Joe never planned to fight the guy and as last minute replacements go Pudwill is actually pretty decent.
He's proven....not quite as proven as Joe but he's right there...considering how long Chad has been pro vs Joe's tenure I say Chad is moving his legacy along in a more pro active way! He definitly has the resume to warrant a fight with Joe...but Joe doens't need Chad to be honest...his legacy is secure...it would definitly HIGHLIGHT his legacy more if he did take on Chad but this fight is FAR too dangerous for Joe if Joe is conteplating Retirement. Joe shouldn't fight a guy like Chad if he has thoughts of hangin them up.
Yeah your thinking along the same lines as myself... I do think Dawson is proven in the boxing world, but can he mix it at the very top level? I.e. with Hopkins, I definitely think BHop would be a good yardstick, if he came through that then yeah he would have nothing else to prove.
