4 weight champion with wins over fellow 4 weight champ Jorge Arce, Vic Darchinyan Simpiwe Vetyeka, Toshiaki Nishioka, 3 weight champ Fernando Montiel etc Discuss...
No, definitely not an ATG. He's a first ballot HOF'er, no doubt, but he still falls short of being categorized as an All-Time Great. I remember that KO of Vic and the dominance he showed for the next couple years. AT one point, he sure looked like he was on that trajectory. I believe he was a #5 or 6 P4P guy for close to a span of 3 or 4 years. He needed a lengthier reign as a dominant champion and he needed to beat some bigger names. Arce, Montiel and Vic are HOF fighter's but that doesn't thrust one into an ATG level. How many divisions was Nonito the actual lineal champion?Being a multi division champ these days doesn't carry anywhere near the same merit as it did back in the day, only if you're a lineal champ. That schooling he took from Guillermo was the beginning of the end of any chance he had at becoming an ATG.
First ballot HOF no doubt and probably the most underrated fighter of the last decade. It takes a lot to be an ATG, but what Nonaire did was special. He didn’t collect just cupcake belts, he beat the number 1 fighter in each weight class he campaigned at barring super fly. Darcy was the number 1 Flyweight when Donaire took his manhood, Montiel was the number 1 Bantamweight and Nish was the number 1 Super Bantamweight while Vetyeka was the number 1 featherweight. And for good measure, Nonaire beat the number 1 super flyweight in Narvaez, although that fight took place at Bantem. For almost a decade Donaire was considered the best fighter below Featherweight and for good reason. My bad, Pong was the best flyweight at the time, rest still stands though.
I thought he was on his way to winning the Vetyeka fight but can't give him full credit for that "win" because of the way it ended. Also in that fight he looked like he wanted out and Vetyeka deserved a rematch.
Thinks he in the same bracket as your Cottos or Sergio Martinezs, not a ATG but great World Champions
Talking of 'underated never get a look in' type fighters of the past decade how about Chris John? Barely ever gets any airtime or recognition..
He’s not. I think the only ATGs of the last generation are Manny, Floyd, Wlad and possibly Marquez although that’s debatable.
I am not sure why people think ATG is easy to attain. It is a hard thing to attain and it takes a whole career to be rated there.
He's obviously not. Got his ass handed by Rigondeaux when he was supposed to shine, then KTFO by Walters a few years later and those two will never make it to the HoF. Hardly ATG accomplishments.
