How bout Mijares? He is a tricky boxer and his counterpunching is not to be underestimated

You are probably true that JMM is better than Donaire now. Nonito is just a rookie relative to JMM in terms of experience. Why don't we look it in another angle. When comparing JMM with Donaire, try to compare them when JMM is at the stage where Donaire is now, which is around 20 fights and you will see that Donaire has probably more skills than JMM.

Have you seen Donaire struggle against anybody or been outpointed in any round? JMM on the other hand seems to make fights difficult regardless of the quality of opposition(that is just my observation based on watching his fights against Jaca, Salido, John, Diaz, Casa, etc.).

 

That is what I have been saying since Amsterdam hype up this guy so much. Mijares is a thoroughbred counterpuncher however his lack of "pop" in his punch is the clink in his armour big time. That is why I was never sold out with this guy because the moment he met someone who walked through his punches, he was a goner.

Is there a pure counterpuncher in boxing today? I doubt that there is one and even the ones that initiate the action have very decnt counterpunching skills.

Take Pac who is farthest from a counterpuncher by defiunition. It was a short counterpunch that actually KDed JMM in the second fight. During the Diaz, Dela hoya fights, Pac was actually doing a very respectable counter by slipping his right hand after an opponents jab reminiscent of the punch that wobbled JMM (the one where he slipped a left after JMM threw a punch at the same time ducking below that punch). Although he does the aggression 80-90 per cent of the time, Pac could actually be an effective counterpuncher because of his speed.

And made the much much bigger Juanma looked like a pillowfisted fighter.

 

are you kidding? I respected Juanma for laying off the pedal after all those shots he fired at Pena.

Be Lucky that Freddy knew when to throw in the towel.

Both showed tons of heart and gained tons of fans and respect in that fight. Don't **** on it by calling juanma featherfisted.atsch

 

Freddie did not stop the fight because Penalosa was being hit tons of punches but rather that he did not see any turnaround in the outcome of the fight. He gave him another round to show that he could change the outcome of the fight but to no avail.

So now, Juanma layed off the pedal? One thing that you probably is not aware is Jerry is that he is a very durable boxer. Lesser fighter could have gone down with that amount of punches. Not putting down JuanMa or anything (this thing was actually not my original idea because after the fight, many were commenting how Gerry made Juanma look featherfisted), but he fought a fighter who is even small at 118 (just compare Gonzales to Penalosa sizewise).

Working word is LOOK. I did not say he was featherfisted because his record speaks volume.

 

^ Penalosa-Juanma was indeed a mismatch due to size difference, and Jerry took Juanma's punches.

Donaire is one of the best counterpunchers around but he has to be on top in order for us to appreciate more of his abilities. He has to stop Concepcion to prove his boxing abilities and be a topdog on a higher weightclass.

 

At stage in his career, JMM and FMJ are still a level above NDonaire. But he is amongst the best in the biz, and he shows no signs of stopping. The great thing about Nonito is that he's the aggressive c-puncher type, perhaps even more so than JMM, w/c makes for exciting bouts. Who knows, maybe a few more wins over elite opposition, and he'll be up there or even surpass JMM and Floyd.

We'll just have to wait and see, till then.

 

Marquez is different league at this stage.
