Is Donald Curry underated?

a surprising punch. Milton was not at his best or Curry just made him look like that. Milton was indecisive that night and was not using his jab well or his punches. Sort of punching both. Then he throws that lazy left out and drops his right and Curry takes a step forward and Milton just flops. It was unbelievable. The irony was when the similar thing happened to Curry a year and a half later with McCallum.

 

He was an excellent stylish boxer who could outbox, outfight and out punch just about anyone at his peak. Unfortunately his peak was painfully short in that he was a great fighter for a painfully short time. He was my personal favourite who lost to other favourites of mine in Honeyghan and McCallum. It was a painful lesson to me that boxing is not just about talent!

 

McCallum was wily crafty fighter. He was losing the fight at close range on the inside and started body snatching. David Gorman, Curry's manager made tactical error asking Curry to relax going into round 5 and Curry eased up on distance / range dropped his guard slightly and McCallum caught him cold with a picture perfect left hook. it was unbelievable that the same thing happened back, and if you look in the audience, when Curry gets up and is waved off by Richard Steele, you can see Milton McCrory watching sitting next to Thomas Hearns and Bob Arum at Caesars Palace indoor arena. He was there.

 

I thought even though it was a good matchup, Curry was rushed into it a little and Mike was peaking at 154. They were going to fight prior to Curry losing to Honeyghan, and McCallum called him Curry chicken. I thought those two fights prior to Mike with the headbutt DQs wins for Curry, told me Curry was not strong enough at 154 for a top guy like McCallum. Mike was just a little stronger mentally and physically, and even though Curry was beating him to the punch, Mike was patient and waited for the opportunity, and when a guy is stronger and bigger physically, he can set up that one punch knockout since one punch can make the difference. Curry moving back and also having to lift his head up to see Mike with that swollen eye made him vulnerable to that left. What a punch. I remember watching it and when Donald went down it was almost surreal. That is what a one punch knockout is. Hearns had one punch knockouts like James Shuler, but Duran and Cuevas were knockouts after he had landed for two rounds clean punches. Mike's punch on Donald was totally out of the blue for a viewers perspective, although McCallum set later he set him up, and when you see it, it does look like was a set up. Mike left his feet to land it. That is commitment to a punch.

It was almost the way Mike left his feet to land it. To that point he had not done anything close to that kind of risk for fear of Donald countering.

 

Theres a hell of a lot of mitigation to those losses. His ex manager Dave Gorman seemingly hexed him made him do one last unlucrative fight at 147 and he turned up weight drained against the 2nd best WW in the world and got mauled.
Before he fought Mccallum every man and his dog wanted to headbutt him in a fight the way Honeyghan had. The mmcallum defeat was almost a freak one punch loss, but Mccallum set him up and Curry previously a defensive master got careless.
After that he wasnt ever the same physically, seemed to lack confidence, the cobra reflexes and speed. Rosi tried to maul him too but didnt have honeyghans boxings skills and speed behind it. Curry was also easily distracted.

Overall summation a fantastic fantastic boxer. Amazing skills. Should have beaten Mccallum and fought SRL or Hagler.
He would have handled the Brelands and Browns in his prime. And Norris as well.
But he would have always lost to the Nunn that he faced.

 

I always felt that Curry fought McCrory at the right time.I think when December 1985 came around, Donald was definitely the better fighter than Milton.If they had fought around late '82, early '83 when it was originally proposed, I think Milton would've beaten Donald, possibly stopped him late.
