Of course I know Duran is an excusemaker. I wrote it on this thread in a previous post. But that doesnt change the FACT that so are you and Leonard.
Duran's faults have been frequently documented on these boards, and rightfully so. I mean he even made excuses WHEN HE WON, lol. Look at the post Lampkin fight for example. And there is no excuse or logical explanation that is acceptable for the Leonard quitjob. However, everything I wrote about Leonard is the plain truth. Watch the pro Leonard documentary about his visit to Duran in Panama not too long ago and read Steve Marantz's book. He was a GREAT fighter but is a world class tool.
My opinion of him not being top 10 ATG is about his lack of wins over fellow greats. He lacks that. Simple. If we could give him a win over Pryor at 140 and one over Benitez at 154 he would probably make it. But he doesn't have it.
What does this have to do with me. The question is, is Roberto Duran a top 10 all time great. My opinion of him not being top 10 ATG is about his lack of wins over fellow greats. He lacks that. Simple. If we could give him a win over Pryor at 140 and one over Benitez at 154 he would probably make it. But he doesn't have it. I can only give my opinion which then naturally has to do with me. If it makes you feel better, I am in the minority when it comes to Duran being overrated in the top 10.. I just don't see the wins over the greats regardless of his lightweight reign and the excuse that he moved up and was slow and washedup.. yet then he is said to be great when he beat Ray at 147 and Moore and 154 and Barkley at 160, but he is old and washed up and fat when he lost to Benitez,Hearns and Leonard in the rematch.
Duran? yeah he will always be an excusemaker. Everytime he lost he made an excuse, which had a lot to do with bravado and saving face, yet not much honesty. Had he beaten Hearns and Benitez and lost to Moore and Barkley, he would have a better case for his excuses.
So you admit Duran was a excusemaker. He was. Whether I am doesn't matter. Leonard? No I don't think he made excuses. If he did, he came back and proved that his excuse might be valid.. He won the second fight. Duran was demantled by Hearns and Benitez and Leonard 2 .. and he made excuses and it was clear the excuses were just face saving comments.
I am in pretty good company if Duran is in the conversation. I mean can you imagine saying he was not in shape for Benitez,Leonard 2 and Hearns. That would mean Duran is the least professional guy out there, and why would he not be in shape? Maybe he knew he would lose and thought why bother.
Ask any fighter....any real fighter which boxer they would idolise or love to replicate. Duran would top many lists. A fighting legend.
