Is Duran's victory over Barkley any more impressive than Gavilan's over Lausse?

I think Luasse is better than Barkley.

KG was a teegnage bantamweight like Duran.

Duran was smaller, I guess, but I don't think there is that much in it...KG could do the business at MW.

Dudes like Cartier and maybe Merentino(?) were on run atthe tilte when Gavilan seprated them from their senses.

Are they particularly comparable really?.Gavilan filled out a lot bigger than Duran, by the time he was a welter, and Lausse really wasn't much bigger than him at all.More of a smallish junior middle type by modern standards.

I'd say Gavilan was a lot closer to his prime years than the stocky cube that was late '80s middleweight Duran as well.

They were cetainly comparable in the sense that Lausse and Barkley were both the bigger guys. I guess i'm wondering what is the hardest task. Lausse possibly hadn't peaked yet, but he would go on an absolutley mad unbeaten streak after losing to KG and I would certainly pick Lausse to beat Barkley.

Gavilan was 26 when he defeated Lausse (27). Gavilan had 103 fights at the time vs Lausse's 37. Lausse was coming off a TKO loss to Antonio Cuevas. At that point, Lausse had never fought outside of Argentina.

Duran was 37 when he defeated Barkley (28). Duran had 91 fights at the time vs Barkley's 29. Barkley was coming off a TKO win over Thomas Hearns.

So you would say "yes" based primarily upon their ages, primarily?

I think the age, factored in with barkley never having been better, and the huge size difference is the crux.
The manner of the win is special as well, though i dont know the manner of the kids win.

How do you think Barkley would have got on with Lausse?

Yes. Lausse was not yet world class at the time he lost to Gavilan. On hindsight the win does look very good.

Laid clean out most likely. He'd have a punchers chance himself though.

It's a shame Lausse didn't get a chance at someone like Downes.

To put it in perspective again, though dmille did most of the work

Barkley was 28 years old, 6'1 tall, 74 inch reach, probably closer to 170-175 pounds by fight time (speculation based on fight night weights on Barkley's other fights). Coming off a KO win over Thomas Hearns who had KO'd Duran. WBC middleweight champion
Duran was 37 years old, 5'7 tall, 67 inch reach, weighed in at 156 pounds.

Eduardo Lausse was 24 years old, 5'8 tall, weighed 155 lbs. Coming off a recent TKO loss to Antonio Cuevas. No significant wins on his record.
Kid Gavilan was 26 years old, 5'10 tall, weighed 151 lbs. Welterweight champion of the world.

Thanks for the correction on Lausse's age. And he did have one fight in Uruguay before facing the Keed.

Duran's decision over Barkley in '89 is tops.......:good

Whoever else in boxing has ever been a huge underdog at age 37 and fighting 20+ pounds above his peak fighting weight and gone on to not only be involved in the fight of the year for 1989, but also win the title???

Granted, "Leonard-Duran 3" sucked Ballpark Franks deep down in Dec. 1989..........
