He is considered by many boxing historian as the best bantamweight ever But if you look closely to his resume, it lacks depth. Even Joe Calzaghe boots a better resume. His biggest wins are Vicente Saldivar and Jose Legra. He was ranked 19th best fighter in the last 80 years by ring magazine in 2002.
How can he be overated when **** all people mention him. He's the goat at bantamweight and more talented then most fighters mentioned on here. All 10 of them.
Yeah, that Jose Medel sure was a bum (x2). And that Saldivar guy, only a naturally larger ATG - what a loser (KO). Caraballo, Aoki, Jamito, Caldwell, Sanchez, Miranda etc. what poor contenders, losers! Seriously though, Jofre has a resume that gets stronger the more you look into it - same with Harada, actually. Those two wins you mention, Sadivar and Legra, alone are better than a lot guys resumes all time, especially with the context of weight being higher than Jofre's prime and Jofre's age of 35 / 37. Then you account for his strong names at Bantam, alongside the sheer dominance and consistency and he is a clear top 5 Bantam historically + 126lb achievements. That Calzaghe comparison is a definite clever troll designed to incite so I won't tackle that. The only way Jofre is overrated is when people rank him much greater than Harada. IMO they are basically tied and either could be in front of the other by one place. Harada was his best opponent at Bantam and he did lose, but at the same time if Jofre had won Harada would've never been as great as he was. And H2H, you really can't get better than Jofre. Honestly, he is rarely mentioned here now a days and is unknown to casuals. He is not overrated. If you have any questions on Jofre, ask @ChrisJS , one of the best posters on the board (sorry Chris). He could clear it up for you.
Imo, you don't underrate him. Since we don't talk about him, ever. I will say I don't agree with picking Jofre over Gomez, though.
Here is the list of fighter that were ranked higher than Jofre. The Ring had him at 19 while ESPN ranked him at 36 (all-time) Here are the fighter that are ranked below him in both list Hearns, Holyfield, Arguello, RJJ, Hopkins, Holmes, Gomez, Morales, Barrera, Foreman
No, he's not over rated. Most see him as #1-3 all time in the bantam weight weight class. If Jofre was around today, he could be the #1 guy in boxing, over Canelo. Nat S. Fleischer, famous historian and creator of ring magazine, a man notoriously partial to the old time fighters said, Jofre is as good as any bantam he's seen.
