i dont know if anyone else has noticed this it seems certain fighters shy away from tough fights in order to remain undefeated, do you think its good for a fighter to have a loss early in their career? for example if PBF didnt have his 0 i personally think he would of faced a higher quality of opposition then he did. be intresting to hear your thoughts on this one

To much emphasis on the '0'

Every guy with talent should do a Hopkins and lose their first fight.

it seems to me that taking a loss has a big psychological effect on fighters who go 30+ fights without being defeated, gain fame and a title etc and when they do get defeated it effects their performances
cases in point hamed and tyson

Being undefeated is not a bad thing. Fighters go out there everytime with the intention of winning. Being undefeated means that you never failed your main objective in the ring.

often it doesn't matter if a fighter is defeated or undefeated. A controversial win against a C level opponent is much worse than a close loss to a certerfied Elite fighter. Also, wether a fighter lost 10 years ago or not means little to nothing about how good he is today.

0 Or no 0 - the level of your competition and the effort that's put forth is what's most entertaining about the sport. Pac-Man isn't undefeated - but damn near all of us would watch when he's fighting.

Being Undefeated is a good thing - as long as you're not being home-feed garbage.

I know its a cliche but 'back in the old days' you werent a good fighter if you hadnt lost as losing adds to your experience, marciano was the only old time great who was undefeated all the rest learnt from it and it made them better fighters after sugar ray first lost he became a better fighter and what the thread is saying is true people protect there 0 to much ,the best dont always fight the best (although that has got better in the last few years) but a reason behind this is the fans- you look how opinion changes on this website its 1 extreme to another ,1 day a fighter is the best in the world would beat anybody from history etc then hes gets beat for the 1st time and all of a sudden hes **** ,you should respect any man who steps in the ring for your entertainment this includes the tomato cans who are put there to lose, another thing to blame is the new age of boxing and cable and ppv hbo showing off the fighter with a glorious fighter with NO defeats so they protect there fighter, I think its these companys that have created this new age of fan anyway what do you guys think

It only means you never truly tested your self. Guys like Floyd who have no loses are an exception to a certain degree. He fought really good fighters but knew he could beat them. As he went up in weight he still fought good fighters but did not mix it up with the best at 147. Still has time to though.

EVERY fighter who carries that 0 with them will always face the same dilemma. Folks will always say..."yeah, that's cause he never fought so and so. That's cause he ducked this one or that one. Marciano gets it, Mayweather gets it and Calzaghe gets it (I'm guilty of it on that one!)

It depends solely on the level of opposition.

    Nothing else.

If De La Hoya had remained undefeated, we would be talking about him as a top 10 ATG probably.

You probably learn more from losing a fight them winning one. In my humble opinion anyways.
