My point is GSP let himself get beatdown by Matt Serra just a few years ago, after everyone was singing his praises about how great he was, who cares if he avenged it, it still happened. Anderson Silva hasn't showed any signs of defeat, hasn't even had a fight go to a descision in how many years? And I feel sorry for the next person who tries a "flying heel hook" on him.
He didn't let himself get beatdown. I think both GSPs losses, he just got caught - once with a sub, once with a big punch which he couldn't recover from. Isn't it a bit embarassing that Silva got caught with a flying heel hook! You are basing Andersons ranking off his good run. I base it on their overall records. It's preference but I think its also being selective. Someone might rank Armstrong over Robinson based on his peak. I take the career as a whole. There may be reasons for why he lost, had tough fight etc but it must be judged as a whole.
oh and getting tooled and subbed on the ground by Takase a guy who is 7-11 is better? Yes it happened.
Yes, Fedor is still number one as he has faced elite competition over the years and is considered undefeated despite the dubious technical loss from his Rings days.
Are we talking p4p all time or now? If now then I think you have to rate them based on relatively recent results. So losses that occurred 4 years ago shouldn't be a factor or not a big one (i.e. Silva's two to Chonan and Takase and GSP's to Hughes.) They should be based on now. Otherwise, what if a guy comes along with some losses before hand to lesser fighters, but clears out say WW and beats GSP? He doesn't get the spot based on those losses?
If anyone actually argues the point my advice to you is stop following MMA. There is no debate, there is no argument. Fedor is not only p4p right now, he's the p4p king period, and will be for a long time. I'm a GSP fan but even I'll concede Fedor is in a different league from everyone else.
P4P or to date. GSP and Silva have been top dogs since they started their p4p run in the rankings. Silva I think is a more recent addition to the high ranks but GSP has been ranked high for a while. In this case I do think both losses should be included. It must be remembered that in MMA records are much smaller cos there is much less bum fighting. If your example came into effect then I would forget alot of losses (I think we did this with Couture maybe). However IF I'm comparing fighters then losses will come into affect. I can't not fault a man who has losses in comparison to one who hasnt lossed or has avenged his losses.
the ufc middleweight division is hardle enthralling, albeit it is getting better now wandy and bisping are making noises.
You're right, the MW division is only going to get better and the whole GSP or Silva argument should work itself out by the end of the year. I'll concede. I can say one thing though, GSP and Anderson are fighting the best guys in their respected weight classes (though Belfort is making noise at 185), I think Fedor would have to come to the UFC to say he's fighting the top competition at his weight. Don't get me wrong, I'm not taking anything away from Fedor, but who can he fight outside of the UFC that would be interesting, Kharitonov or Barnett?
Barnette and Arlovski were both considered top 5 almost all MMA websites. Most being 1 and 2 after Fedor. Affliction HW division has the top 3 HW fighters. Fedor beat one of them. Now it's Barnette vs Fedor #1 vs #2 or #3. UFC was forced to bring CC back their division is so weak. Whens the last time UFC done that? You seriously just quoted Dana White is all. Fedor killed #5(at the time) in the world in Tim Sylvia in 36 seconds. And make #2 or 3 in the world look like road kill in 3 and a half minutes. Also, people who say AA was dominating the fight before the KO, watch the effin fight. Fedor who cuts and bruises like he's made out of clay didn't have a mark on his face. The whole fight was filmed at an angle that makes all exchanges look a lot worse then they really were.
Screw the rankings. Barnett's last two fights were against Yvel and Rizzo, and he's #1 contender? What is this, 2003? Tim Sylvia was brutalized by Couture, and had his forearm broken in half by Mir. And then Lesnar goes on to beat Couture. I think Fedor could beat these guys, but lets see it happen.
Thought about it, I'll admit I'm wrong. Fedor is and always will be p4p #1, he has #1 spot at HW far longer, than other p4pounders, Liddell, Wandy, BJ, Hughes. They were on top of the world years ago with Fedor, but they've fizzled out he keeps going. Fedor owes us nothing, he could retire now and has nothing to prove. Selfishly, as a fight fan there are fights I'd like to see happen, but he has continued time and time again to step in ring with top competition for over five years now and never came close to losing. HE IS, ALWAYS WILL BE, THE MAN.
