Tito's status will surely be appreciated some 20-30 years from now once that prevalent ill feelings against him for beating some of the best USA can offer at his time simmers down...
The Man is Legend and it shouldnt be brought into question, by the way did the boxers that beat him are legends themselves? DLH - beaten 2 times by Shane Mosley Bhop- beaten 2 times by Jermain Taylor Winky- beaten by Bhop & Vargas Jones - K.T.F.O. by Tarver & Johnson so whos a legend in boxing? basically you will say all these guys are **** right?:-(
70% of people only say he is due to the fact they hate Calzaghe, so they're trying to justify Hopkins resume further.
I don't really have a strong opinion on it, but I would say no if pushed to give an answer. I like Tito and I definitely do rate him, but I think legend is too strong a word. IMO, he lost to the 4 best fighters he ever fought (Jones Jr, Hopkins, Wright and... yes, Oscar. I had it 116-112 De La Hoya, a clear win in a poor fight), as Whitaker was well well past prime when he fought Tito. However, Tito had some great wins and has a strong resume to match how strong he was at 147. His punch-power was fantastic. But I think to be a "legend" you have to be more... adaptable than Tito. Tito would always lose to a slick boxer with a good defence. I rank Tito in a group along with Joe Calzaghe, Shane Mosley, Winky Wright and Kostya Tszyu - very very good fighters but not quite legends.
I voted Yes, because I classify him as a fantastic fighter. However, the word legend is branded about far too much these days. Great fighter yes, and I'm not trying to discredit him, legend, no.
if you can come back and make 14 mil fighting a washed up Jones... Then your something in my book. He was a welter legend in my eyes.
Legend. And if people don't believe that, just ask Cotto or any other Puerto Rican fighter that tries to follow in Tito's footsteps. Tito was a WW destroyer. You always knew what you were going to get and he never disappointed. Yes, the Oscar fight is always there, but that was peak Oscar when he was still a fighter and not a Global Icon or whatever. And Oscar was a special fighter. Trinidad didn't help himself any with Hopkins, Wright or Roy Jones, but that doesn't take away from what he was as a WW/JMW, at least not in my opinion. I like guys that try to push their limits and see what they can achieve, instead of not taking any chances. I'll always have a happy memory of Tito for the beatdown he put on Vargas.
