Larry Merchant appeared on ESPNs First Take and offered his take on all things Pacquiao versus Mayweather. Mayweather thinks he can defeat Manny Pacquiao, and he would be the favorite leading into that fight should it ever take place. But what Mayweather is more afraid of than anything is getting that L on his record, Merchant said. He has marketed himself as this undefeated and unbeatable fighter. And to a lot of new boxing and unsophisticated fight fans, this is a big, big deal. To anyone who is familiar with the history of the sport, a single loss has never been a big deal. Because if you fight enough good, young fighters, history tells us that eventually someones going to beat you. The problem is not that Floyds afraid of Pacquiao, but he does recognize Pacquiao as being the greatest threat to him at this time. So considering the Risk vs. Reward equation, why take a risk fighting a tough style match-up who will demand an equal amount of money, when you can make 40 million dollars fighting a more favorable style match-up who will only demand maybe 3 or 4 million dollars? What do you think: is Mayweather scared of Pacquiao? Or does he simply think that its a dumb business move (because of the risks involved) to fight his arch rival?
Post fight commentary of Pac-JMM 3: Jim Lampley:"Emmanuel, if JMM was able to counter-punch all Pac gave tonight, is it the right time for Floyd to jump in and say 'let's do the fight, i'll counter-punch you to death'" Steward: "No, Jim. Floyd is too careful and why will he risk that undefeated record where there's a chance that Pac can beat him. But it's still a fight I think Mayweather will win."
I'd like to agree with Merchant. Floyd is not scared of Pacquiao per se, however, he knows that of all the guys at 147 only Pac has the closest chance of beating him. That 0 in his record might be the most important thing to him. It's his only selling point aside from the Money persona. If he loses that, he'll probably lose a lot of luster and drawing power.
pac is no threat. just ask our good friends 38 year old Marquez and one legged Bradley. it comes down to money and ego's. nothing more.
