Floyd can’t be criticised for not dropping back to 140 to fight Hatton. And especially as he’d just fought Oscar at JMW. But Ricky only moved up to WW to get the fight with Floyd. When did he duck Floyd? I don’t remember that. Why would he have ducked him at his favoured weight, and then chased down a fight above his favoured weight? Have you got any details on this.
I don't like to answer a question with a question. But in this case it is logical to me that it is necessary. 1. Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. GOAT boxer? 2. Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. GOAT boxer in any of the divisions in which he won the belt? 3. What category is it? Since I would answer "no" to the first two questions, I do not need to answer the third question. Whoever answered "yes" to question number 2 should answer question number 3
It all depends on the circumstances doesn’t it. Height and reach can be vitally important. Apart from when he outweighed JMM, Floyd wasn’t a weight bully. He did have a huge advantage with his big reach though.
He turned pbf down after pbf beat gatti saying he wasn't ready. Hatton and cotto sat ringside for that fight. Pbf couldn't get him in the ring so be moved up to 147 to chase Zab.
I don’t remember him doing that. He beat Kostya before targeting Maussa for his belt. Floyd fought Mitchell before he fought Zab.
Pbf fought Mitchell at 147 as a way to get used to a new weight before fighting Zab. But he only moved up because Hatton turned him down at 140.
I’m not buying that. Floyd took Gatti’s belt. Ricky had taken Kostya’s belt. He then lined up Maussa for the only remaining major belt. Why couldn’t Floyd have pursued the winner of that fight in order to have become the undisputed JWW champion? You can’t claim that Ricky ducked him by targeting a fellow champion in order to become a unified champion. That’s silly. That’s never been a duck. Floyd took a lot of criticism for fighting Mitchell.
You don't have to buy it but it happened. Maybe you weren't following boxing back then but I was, it happened. Pbf tried to fight Hatton after he beat Kostya and after he beat gatti but was turned down by Hattons team saying they weren't ready. There were many threads here about it back then. Hatton sat ringside and saw that skill and knew better he ducked him. Pbf didn't care about fighting the other title holder because he was a bum 140 was weak and 147 was the better division. He wanted Zab who was the champ at 147 and had one fight at 147 with Mitchell before facing zab.
I absolutely was following boxing back then. I’ve been following the sport since the late 80’s, and studying it from the early 90’s. Ricky was very complimentary of Floyd after the Gatti performance. But targeting Maussa for the other belt wasn’t a duck. The fight could have been made in 2006 for all of the major belts had Floyd not have moved up. In the end, Ricky had to go out of his comfort zone to get Floyd at WW instead of JWW.. The term of ducking gets thrown around far too easily. If the timing wasn’t right for Floyd, you didn’t label him as being a ducker. You have to be objective here. You can’t give credit to him for beating a guy like Gatti for his belt, but then say that the belts at JWW didn’t matter and weren’t important to him. All of his title wins and belts were important to him. Fights against Ricky and Cotto at JWW, would have been better than fights against Mitchell and Judah at WW. Judah had already been beaten by Kostya, and he’d also just lost to Baldomir.
Gatti was the media darling of the division he was the name he was the draw. That's why he fought Gatti carlos was a nobody not a draw. Hatton decided not to fight pbf after his win for whatever reason probably because he saw the demolition job he put on Gatti and didn't want that work. With that said the fact is Floyd asked for the fight Hatton said no so he moved on to bigger and better things.
Hatton unified the division and then wanted to fight Floyd. Floyd didn’t move on to bigger and better things. He fought Mitchell and got heavily criticised, before he then fought Zab, who’d been taken out by Kostya, and who’d just lost to Baldomir. He then fought Baldomir afterwards who wasn’t a drawer. Fighting Mitchell, Judah and Baldomir, wouldn’t have been as good or as big as having fought an undisputed fight against Hatton at JWW. Two undefeated fighters contesting all of the belts. The timing not been right for Ricky doesn’t constitute as a duck. He had to move up to WW the following year in order to chase down Floyd, before they then fought in 2007. There’s no reason why Floyd couldn’t have tried to have made the fight after he’d fought Maussa. Mitchell could have been just a stay busy fight.
How can you get heavily criticized for taking a tune up at a new weight and then the very next fight you fight zab??? So in your world he should've jumped straight from 140 to 147 and fought Zab without a testing the waters fight at a new weight? That's dumb. He fought baldo because he was the lineal champ and had he not fought him people would have accused him of ducking baldo. Who wouldn't fight the lineal champ of a division if given the opportunity?
You know why he was criticised. Mitchell wasn’t relevant. And the very next fight he fought Zab? Again, the same Zab who’d just lost to Baldomir? The same Zab who’d been blown away by Kostya? He didn’t have to jump anywhere did he. That’s the point. Hatton wanted to fight Maussa. He then wanted to fight Floyd in 2006. Floyd didn’t have to go to WW then. There’s no reason why he couldn’t have fought Hatton in 2006 after Hatton’s cuts had healed. Cotto was also emerging as a very good, unbeaten fighter who had the WBO belt. Targeting Hatton or Cotto in 2006, would have been better than fighting Zab and Carlos Baldomir. So he definitely didn’t go on to better things. You say “Who wouldn’t fight the lineal champ, had they have had the opportunity?” Okay. Well, who wouldn’t fight an undefeated fighter in a big an undisputed fight had they have had the opportunity? And Floyd would have had that opportunity in 2006. The main point is this: Ricky wanting to fight Maussa before Floyd doesn’t constitute as a duck.
The one the fans were calling for was Antonio Margarito who had just demolished Cotto, makig him quit on his knees. But Floyd wanted no part of that, which was proven in those videos that everyone in the boxing fraternity must have seen & laughed at Floyd's hysterical breakdown on seeing Margarito standing in front of him smiling To merely ask him "Why wont you fight me Floyd" The reason was perfectly obvious Floyd was terrified of Antonio. Someone asked Floyd the same question. he stuttered & stammered " Margarito, Ive never heard of him , Who is he, Have you heard of him ?? ROFLMAO LOL A voice from the back said "But you just met him Floyd before you totally embarrassed yourself " Don't forget that's when Floyd "retired" again because he said nobody loved him.lol Floyd ducked Margarito in public So it cannot be denied He stayed "retired" until the CSAC, with Naz Richardsons fairy tale as their supposed proof removed him from the equation by snatching his boxing license away saying. " We are not returning Mr Margarito's licence to box in Ca because we Still believe he MAY have tried to load his gloves" Talk about a kangaroo court " He was banned from the sport for over 2 1/2 years he couldn't even train let alone fight to earn his living Floyd ducked The Tijuana Tornado so blatantly it was said he QUACKED!! when he walked LOL This is this person you are hailing as Boxings The Best Ever ??? Don't make me laugh More like TBCJE The Biggest Con Job Ever !!!!!!!!!!!!
