Can't fault Tyson for seeking the belt. Spinks was the champion, but he was a light heavyweight trying to begin a reign at heavyweight. Which was never going to happen.

Not Tyson's fault, but at the same time it is what it is.

I don't blame Tyson at all, he did what he needed to do. But l don't consider it a historic or even great victory nor do l rate it much of a fight in terms of entertainment value.

Oh come on, Van! Tyson-Spinks was the biggest fight since Ali-Frazier. Bigger than Holmes-C00ney. It was coined SuperFight '88, since the term "SuperFight" had only been invented a year before with Hagler-Leonard (I believe).

For 1 round blowouts I watch these particular fights the most for some reason.

All the hype in the world can't make Spinks anything more than a blown up lightheavyweight.

I'll assume you've been watching boxing for as long as l have. If so l think you'll agree that often there is a disconnect between what the public thinks and what hard core fans think. The perfect example is the Lewis/Tyson fight. Any knowledgeable, and rational boxing fan had to know how that fight would unfold. In my mind being a bit older than Tyson l was pretty sure how it was going to unfold. And while it may have ended a round or two quicker than l would have thought prior to both men walking into the ring, after that the quick ending was totally predictable. I just watched this fight about 2-3 months ago just to see if after 30 years or so my memory hadn't changed.

For me at least, the two Ruddock fights were far better.

Oh I completely agree that Tyson was the favorite and that Spinks needed a sledge hammer to even compete that night. But the bout was HUGE in terms of hype surrounding this "event".

Undefeated Undisputed Champion: Mike Tyson - VS -
Undefeated Lineal and Ring Champion: Michael Spinks.

And yes, Tyson was the champion and SPinks was the challenger. There were also many people who picked Spinks to win.

In terms of competition the Tyson-Ruddock bouts were far more scintillating.

That's just too bad than. He won the Heavyweight title. Other blown up light heavyweights who won the heavyweight title:

    Fitzsimmons
    Tunney
    Charles
    Patterson
    Moorer
    Jones Jr.

And the others who lost in heavyweight bids:

    Carpentier
    John Henry Lewis
    Conn
    Moore
    Foster
    Adamek

They were more scintillating in no small part due Tyson being diminished.

I have to disagree, once you win a legitimate title you are a heavyweight.

Spinks was a heavyweight for 3 years. He won the belt and stayed there. He was a legitimate heavyweight.

Obviously, but that doesn't make it a great fight.

So what? That doesn't mean it was a great win. It's not Tyson's fault Spinks posed no threat to him. Tyson himself doesn't regard this win that highly.
