Frankie Gavin has already shown he isnt "top top" level by losing to Bundu(who then lost to Thurman), and when you are in a division as strong as Welterweight whats Gavin got that will make him exciting in this division? To be honest Gavin doesnt look a force at welter. Not sure if he should try to get down to light welter, or maybe he just isnt a genuine athlete?? Anyway no matter how many times Hearn says he's got a "Major" new signing I cant help thinking Gavin fails to live up to that hype. If Gavin was such a major talent why did he struggle to shine against Skeete??? The reality is that Hearn has been DESPERATE to put on a show in Birmingham and he was confident of doing that successfully until this signing. So for Hearn its an exciting time but for fans outside of Birmingham this is a pretty average signing and leaves you feeling underwhelmed :bart
Because before the fight people was saying Skeete was good.. not just his followers of fans.. it's not a bandwagon either way. He beat Bundu winning nearly all the rounds. And Mayweather is better because he beat Hatton less (worse/better etc)
I think Gavin is very skilled (that's plain to see when he is 'on'), but he isn't as good as he thinks he is. Those days of him fighting the best on the amateur scene are long gone. They ended like 8 years ago? Who does he spar with remotely on that level now? Nobody I bet. I think he is on the downward curve and will start declining, but not at a rapid pace due to him having sound fundamentals. He could make LW with a proper nutritionist, not a man who whips bodybuilders into shape (there's so much difference between the two). But, mentally, he seems to think he can't. He even thinks he can't shift 7lbs to get down to LWW! Crazy. That'd be super easy. Does he shift tickets? Well, the fight with Bundu wasn't even in Birmingham! What does that tell you when you have a fighter who is popular in a fight of that magnitude? He can't be as popular as Eddie thinks he might be. I feel that the ship for Gavin mixing with the world class opponents has sailed. I mean he hasn't even sparred over in the states ONCE has he? Gallaghers gym (which Gavin should be at, IMO), go over every year. Gavin needs that. Should've gone with Golden Boy. Should've got world class sparring in the states had he not gone with them. Should've buckled down and cracked on at LWW. Should've got a world class coach in his corner. His whole career is shoulda, woulda, coulda.
I dunno what fight you guys were watching.. one KD and a good round after.. the rest were all Gavins.
