Well he was wrong, Frazier was far more elusive and had a sharper hook.

Ali never went to prison - he was retired for 3 years due refusing to go to Vietnam.
The Frazier win was huge and Ali beating Frazier twice in the next two fights was equally huge.
And then when Foreman KO'd Frazier, Ali was an underdog against Foreman and won by Knockout.
It was a great time in boxing.

The same argument goes for Frazier, he also lost a step or two after his first encounter with Ali.

The Frazier of the 1st Ali fight, is a nightmare for Ali at any stage of his career.

    Absolute rubbish.

A bout stopped after 3 rounds rounds due to a cut eye and a 15 round bout just six weeks later is nowhere enough of a warm up for Frazier after nearly four years of inactivity.

Ali beat Mildenberger comfortably and you're not seriously suggesting that Ali was in his prime when 'he had a few shaky moments' against Jones, Cooper and Banks...

I'm talking about prime Ali and you're responding by going back as far as 1962...

Let's take it a couple of steps further. I'm sure Ali had a few shaky moments as an amateur as well.

    FFS...

A prime Frazier was never the same after facing a ring rusty Ali who was easier to hit, less accurate with his punches and past his prime...

    Thank you.

    That says it all.

Ali did prison time but it wasn't because of his stance on Vietnam.

Ali fought Zora Folley in March 1967. His next bout was against Jerry Quarry in October 1970.

That's "3 years out of the ring"

    Between Folley and Quarry, yes.

But, as I said, he was NOT three years out of the ring when he fought Frazier, because he fought Quarry and Bonavena in 1970.

    So?

He had very recently come back from three and a half years out of the ring which clearly had an effect when he faced Frazier.

    He wasn't the same fighter.

Weak excuse. He fought twice in 1970, and he was just age 29.

    Give Frazier credit.

It amazes me that a couple of people on this thread think that two fights in six weeks is all that's needed to brush off the ring rust from three and a half years of inactivity before taking on the world heavyweight champion (and a very, very good one).

Or maybe they just don't like Muhammad Ali.

    It's not an excuse.

It's a perfectly valid reason - three and a half years out of the ring will have a massive effect and can't be overcome with two fights in six weeks.

The only thing that's weak is your argument.

    Here we go... Another one.

That brings the current total to three - real names are Jacqui, Marvis and Joseph Jr.
