I think thats a bit harsh in my view. Personally, I don't think Oscar would have won no matter who he had in his corner when he boxed Mayweather. I mean, yes, maybe Roach could have done things differently, but it was Oscar who faded down the stretch. From all the footage I see of Roach & Oscar in preparation for Mayweather, Roach put Oscar through his paces & then some. A lot of boxers try to shelve the blame on others when they lose. Very, very few fighters have the bottle to admit, the better man won tonight & that's the way it goes. Roach is one of the best trainers in the world. Not only that, he tells a guy what he should be telling him, no what a fighter wants to hear.
what you see in the corner doesn't say **** about a trainer, the trainer trains his fighters during training camp.
Still doesn't change the fact that he has trained and guided 2 future HOF, ATG absolute legends. And with his current one about to reach that same platform in the near future. I honestly think he's a GREAT trainer. He's not the best trainer of all time, but one of the best IMO.
Roach is one of the best trainers in the sport today. IMO he's only overrated if you think he's a boxing genius/god of some kind.
If Bernard worked with him, and Bernard is arguably the smartest fighter in the game, I doubt Roach is overrated. He's just the type of trainer that works with guys that already know how to fight and aren't looking for amateur instructions.
Most overrated has to be Buddy McGirt. "Look baby, use your jab baby! Let me see some head movement baby! Give me that jab baby! You have got to box with him baby! Use your jab baby! Look baby, stay aware in there and box baby!" McGirt is like a broken record in the corner for all of his fighters.
