Is Froch's resume now better than Calzaghe's?

Yes he is and should be rated ahead as well. Froch fights everyone wherever, he never hid in a club fighting tomatoes.

 

Robin Reid beat Calzaghe by 2 points on my card, and I watched the fight 3 times.

Clean, effective punching was done almost exclusively by Robin Reid.

 

I had it a win for Reid personally too. What counts is what happened not what we think should happen, that would be stupid.

 

and Calzaghe refusing a valid rematch but accepting Mario Veit, king of 4-6 rounds for a rematch, yes well done there.

As I recall someone - could possibly have been you actually - telling me a while ago, Reid was offered the rematch immediately but refused it because he wanted more money for it than W-arren was offering. Reid would then spend much of the rest of his career, especially after the Ottke fight, bemoaning the fact that he couldn't get a rematch with Calzaghe and ignoring the fact that he'd turned it down initially.

And, as you well know, Viet fought his way into a WBO mandatory spot and the WBO forced Calzaghe to fight him or else be stripped. Reid never even attempted to become WBO Mandatory.

And as you know, no world champion should have been fighting Veit once. Joe did it twice.

joe thought Reid was regional level too, he screwed up there. But he only screwed up once.

 

I dont see how you can knock Joe for this. Veit earned his rematch by becoming WBO Mandatory, as long as Calzaghe was WBO Champion he had to fight his mandatory, you dont get to knock a world champion for defending against his mandatories.

I bet if Calzaghe had dropped the WBO Title and fought someone other than Veit you would be one of the loudest voices claiming he'd ducked a Veit rematch.

 

Don't talk rubbish. The Veit rematch was such a farce that it got Joe booted off Skysports.

 

And a fight that was unavoidable as long as Calzaghe was WBO Champion. I dont see other Champions getting this amount of scorn for fighting Mandatories that were vastly inferior to them.

 

Froch's resume was already better than Calzaghe's after he finished the Super Six.

 

In reality the Veit fights wouldn't be as panned if they were aberrations, or the odd easy defense. Unfortunately, all Calzaghe's fights around that time were of similar quality. To top it off, the WBO's rankings were weak, and to strictly harvest them for defenses was questionable, at best.

I also doubt you would get that reaction if there wasn't a hew and a cry about how desperate Calzaghe was to fight Roy Jones, or Bernard Hopkins, and get big fights.


As for the OP, no Froch's resume isn't better than Calzaghe's IMO. But it's close.

I think you're one of the fairest people on here, with regards to Joe.

In my opinion, Joe gets criticised for Veit, because he was too good to be forced into fighting him again at that stage of his career.

Everybody fights low level guys at some point, and you can use my favourite fighter as a prime example.

Roy fought Frazier, Kelly, Harmon and Woods etc, as mandatories to keep his belts.

But the difference is, Roy had already achieved great things when he fought those guys.

Whereas Joe was a class act, who hadn't got his true recognition at 31 years of age.

So I accept that he had to fight Veit again, to keep his belt. But in my opinion, he should never have been the WBO, SMW champ at that point. Because he was better than that.

 

Yeah, Veit was the final straw, the Mkrtchyan fight (another nobody), was supposed to be Joe's swan song at SMW before he moved up to take on the best at LHW, instead he stayed where he was and fought another nobody in Salem, so when he then re-matched Veit Skysorts had had enough.
