How do we know that Fury isn’t just another Buster Douglas? People are talking about him like he is a highly accomplished fighter but how good is his actual record? He beat a 39 year old fighter who was too cautious to throw anything until too late. He’s had no other big fights apart from that. Who’s to say that it wasn’t a one off? Douglas at least beat a young Tyson who was in his physical prime and he really beat the hell out of him in pretty much every single round.
Fury has never been half as smooth, skilled or as coordinated as Buster was on his best night. Fury is "fluid" for a man of his stature. Buster was fluid, period. Man could really box. Knock people down with jabs.
Agree with this but I am loathe to use the word "fluid" with Fury unless I am talking about the amount of alcohol he imbibes. The Douglas that fought Tyson was levels above the Fury that fought Klitschko.
His claim to fame is barely edging a 40 year old guy with +20 years in the sport and the other foot in the grave, in one of the most dire heavyweight championship bouts of all time. I've never been impressed. Douglas dissected a near prime Tyson who had regressed a bit due to dedication and lifestyle issues. He was hardly some depreciated shell of himself like Wlad was when Fury flaccidly limped past him.
Agree with all above. But, I think what the poster is really getting at is: "Is Fury a one hit wonder?" I think that is quite likely. And he pulled it off in one of the worst heavyweight championship bouts in the history of sports. Over 12 full rounds Klitschko landed only 52 punches (less than 5 per round) and the ****ing winner only landed 86 punches! (less than 8 per round). And, not a truly solid punch by either man landed all night. A truly dreadful and shameful display by both men.
Douglas had already established himself as a very skilled and talented boxer that lacked motivation/desire and was inconsistent to say the least. If I remember correctly, he already had 4 losses, including at least one title shot vs Tucker…But his M.O. was inconsistency and after his one big win, he went back to his old self with even less motivation… Fury is undefeated and doesn’t have a long history of showing up to big fights out of shape. His melt down after the Klitscho win is definitely concerning but, he’s shown desire in coming back. In comparison, in a fairly short time frame after his win Douglas was easily ko’d by Holyfield and in a diabetic coma not long after that.
This. Douglas never lacked elite talent or ability, but his dedication and heart for the sport is what he lacked and why he rarely showed up in shape.
Yes this is what I meant. Is Fury just a one hit wonder? Like Buster he has done nothing of note after his big win. Still we have people on here talking about him like he has achieved a lot. He’s not even had one title defence. He’s come back as an even fatter version of himself.
We will never see another 260 pound 6'8" move the way Fury does. LEGIT switch hitter. underrated toughness After he's done with Wilder you'll all see. second coming of Muhammad ali.
Fury is the most overrated HW ever and he cannot be compared to legit fighter like Douglas who was very good . Douglas stopped mike tyson in his prime while Fury outlanded shot 40yo Wlad by 20 slaps . Douglas >>>Fury
