Both fighters were known for showing up out of nowhere and have tons of talent. Both were unique: Fury a huge flabby guy who could move well, Ike a heavy handed guy with good stamina. They both have thin resumes, but in their brief careers they manage to pull off unexpected and great wins that made the entire division on alert. Then they both suddenly went into retirement due to major mental health issues. The boxing world sighed when they disappeared because everyone was curious to see them reach their full potential. There are rumors fury might pull out of the third Wilder fight which is incredibly disappointing. He will likely be stripped and then his name will inevitably show up in articles and YouTube titles with people asking "what happened?" Or "what could have been?". Another athlete who squandered his abilities in and out the ring. It's virtually unheard of for a champion of Fury's calibre to retire not once, but twice without facing all the best opponents.
It is a decent parallel, accept that fury is not in prison. If Fury wants to fight (my god, big if!) then being stripped would be the best thing. He could ask for a rating with one of the others and get a match against the Joshua-Usyk winner, no problem. If he pulls out, he will have to forfeit some money to Wilder, and once that is done, he could be done with Deontay. I don't think it is going to happen. fury really only fights for money. He is not just going to hand it all over.
Fury has his faculties a lot under control than Ike , Ike was straight up crazy making people call him President and just crazy in his head. Setting a no. of punches thrown in HW along with David Tua naturally doesn't alleviate the situation.
Fury actually competed and succeeded at the highest level against the best in the world. Ike did no such thing (although he did have 2 quality wins against Chris Byrd and David Tua).
Ibeaubuci had severe mental problems. Very unpredictable and dangerous person. Fury just had a brief drug induced psychosis that went away when he stopped using cocaine.
That's not how I see Fury's period of inactivity. The drugs didn't create the mental illness, that was always there and was probably exacerbated by his suspension by UKAD which for a long time was hidden, we just saw a guy spiral out of control and back out of the Wlad rematch and didn't know why. But in reality he could of never fought Wlad in the UK as he was suspended and was hiding that fact and knowing his career could be over tipped him over the edge and like a lot of people with mental health issues self medicated with drugs and alcohol. Once Fury's admitted his guilt and it was decided the time served on his suspension was enough punishment and he could return to boxing that allowed him to get back on an even keel again and so his mental health issues became manageable again and so the drug taking and drinking stopped.
I wasn't suggesting Fury was AS crazy as Ike, just that it seemed to be turning into a similar story of two talented HW prospects whose careers looked promising and then got derailed by major mental health problems. Fury's issues were nothing light. He was not only depressed, an alcoholic, and morbidly obese, he was even suicidal at one point and openly admitted it (this was not long after beating Wladmir which is alarming as the vast majority of athletes are in cloud 9 after winning a championship and can spend months or years in a state of complete joy and exuberance). Having achieved his goal of winning the title he felt empty. But then after getting stripped and suspended he had too much free time and spent a lot of time on social media and well...that was a dark time in heavyweight history as Fury made many outlandish and controversial statements that would not be seemed politically correct. I do believe be any or may not have regretted or at least mag be embarrassed by some of these statements, but I don't think this can just be blamed purely on drugs/depression. I think the substance abuse and idleness simply highlighted something that was already there. Which is why people began speculating he could have untreated bipolar disorder or some other severe issue. Both his dad and his promoter Arum keep letting it slip that Fury gets distracted easily and loses focus and are seemingly terrified of Fury not being his old self and me rally prepared for the wilder rematch. Why does a grown man and world champion constantly need people around him to take his training seriously? Why do they always have to do damage control and sweep controversial statements he makes under the rug--especially given that he supposedly got over his "bad habits" years ago? I have a nagging suspicion we could end up with another Oliver McCall situation.
Well yes, Fury did manage to win a championship over the fossilized remains of a gunshy Wladmir in a boring fight with few punches thrown. And he did manage to beat a completely inept Wilder who looked lost and dazed from round 1 with seemingly no power in his shots. Both times it was during an era of splintered titles and he was never the clear unanimously agreed upon #1 HW. Both his title winning efforts were bizarre and uninspiring affairs, but it's true he did become champion and Ike didn't regardless. What Fury and Ike have in common as that neither achieved their full potential. Fury took a long 3 year layoff after he won just when the division was starting to heat up and you had guys like Wilder and Joshua emerging as potential rivals and Wladmir wanted a rematch. Then fury had another layoff due to the covid outbreak and it seems like he may end up vacating his title for the second time without having defended any of his belts once in his whole career despite there being many worthy contenders.
After fury has decimated Joshua he will have beaten 3 reigning champions. Two in their own backyards. Dominated all three of them. With one hand literally behind his back The legacy of Fury will be echo'd in eternity. This content is protected
Only similarities are they both had mental health issues. But Fury’s weren’t as severe as Ike’s. Ike heard voices and was violent towards others, Fury was depressed and more self destructive. Plus Fury achieved more then Ike but while both are very skilled at there own particular styles of fighting Fury is way more talented because of his ability to switch stances, box beautifully when need be and brawl when need be. Ike was a decent boxer but was more of a come forward fighter who outworked and broke his opponents down.
I'm a much bigger fury fan than the fake bodybuilder, but his lack of defending a title is infuriating I have no doubt he smashes Aj to pieces, but Aj is a better champ and fights/defends titles regularly It's annoying, but sometimes you have to be honest. If Fury pulls out against Wilder? I don't care about his future. I won't go as far as saying I want Aj to be the man, but he is better for the sport than Tyson
I don’t see it that way at all. Fury strikes me as a very mentally strong person. I don’t buy that the UKAD situation (which wasn’t even that big deal as worst case scenario he could’ve rode out the suspension in the UK while fighting abroad) was the cause of his mental health issues. If some simple life stress could crush him like that then he would’ve never been capable to go into hostile territory to beat Klitschko in front of 55k ppl or go 12 rounds with Wilder when everyone thought he was washed up. His career up until the Klitschko fight went along fairly normally. No public rants of suicidal ideations or massive weight gains. It’s a well known fact that street drugs such as cocaine that alter brain chemistry can induce psychosis in certain individuals (esp young ppl). Imo Fury got on the booger sugar after the high of Wlad victory and it messed his head up for a couple years. When he got clean he went back to normal. Very different from a violently psychotic person like Ibeabuchi who purposely crippled a minor and broke a sparing partner’s knee.
