Granted, alot of fuss was made about Gamboa before he got season tickets to the canvas. Fans, and some industry people, put a heavy premium on flash and handspeed. Personally, I get alot more excited by substance so I was never more than lukewarm about Gamboa.

I think there's a lot of hype concerning him but that's completely justly imo. He's a spectacualir fighter and that brings (a lot of) hype with it. Were he a boring fighter that would not be the case.

He has a lot of potential and he also has some weaknesses. But he remains a pleasure to watch.

So far he's been living up to the expectations. So I say no he's not overhyped.

I , for example prefer a fighter like Juanma. I can just see Gamboa lose. And believe me, there is a load of boxers that I just cannot see losing..

A bit overhyped. He´s very good but he also still lacks experience and has some flaws, he has to work on and his chin worries me a bit. But I think he will end up as a top p4p fighter.

I think that for a prospect who has never fought a fighter better than C+ level (Jimenez - his best opponent so far), he is overhyped. He is very exciting, has some of the best skills in boxing, but he is still overhyped. Even if he is lucky and becomes a top 25 p4p fighter, B+ at least, he is still ovrhyped. Many other prospects who look at least as good, overall, don't get 1/10th of the hype or credit he gets. He has some huge positives, but also some very worrying minuses for someone of whom expectations are so high. The main reason Gamboa has won himself some haters and critics, beside his arrogant style in the ring, which borders on the foolhardy, (but that's what makes him so exciting!) and beside his disrespectful and silly comments about Pacquiao, are his fans, a few of which go overboard in hyping and praising him as the next p4p No.1 and future top ATG, when he's not proven himself at any level required to be so hopeful for him. Good luck to the guy, though! Exciting prospects and full-on, risktaking, aggressive fighter IS what brings fans to "the sport" and it's great that he is hyped so much amongst the casual fans. Hard-core fans should know better, though and not get so defensive of him when people criticise him objectively. A bit overhyped? No, Froch is a bit overhyped. Gamboa is overhyped more than just a bit. Remember when his fans said he'd KO Pacquiao in a couple of rounds? My £0.02.

very skilled offensively with an easy-on-the-eye style.

i do think he is overhyped though in that i've heard some fans talking him up to be a future ATG, when more than likely he'll win a world title without really dominating the division (he'll probably have a similiar career to berto).

It depends on the hype. Some think he'd beat Pacquiao right away, others say he's a violent KO to happen. In October 2008, it's pretty balanced. From me, he's only getting the hype he's backing up with his hands. At 12 fights, no matter what you say in stepping up in comp, he's has already fought 3 ranked fighters, a former world title challenger and stopped a few who were never stopped or even knocked down before.

On the other hand, his weaknesses are evident, therefore my opinion is simple: he's a flawed super talent, and his exciting style, defensive holes and ring arrogance makes him so popular - you either love him or hate him, but you can't ignore him. Pretty much the controversial figure boxing needs right now. He's not a controverisal trash talker outside of the ring and boring safety first inside like Mayweather. He's more like Naseem Hamed.

The Hamed analogy is just perfect.

I said after the first time I saw him fight that he was a KO waiting to happen. People here called me names, told me I was crazy etc. Also, Gamboa's Chin is not very good. He has a borderline Glass Jaw. The hype will end soon when he is brutally KOed by someone.

There are prospects out there with less experience than him who have looked better against better opposition who get 1/10th of the hype. As to the Hamed analogy, I think that's ridiculous. why Hamed and not Lacy? How can you compare a very experienced, mature prospect who's only fought a C+ level fighter once and didn't murder him either with Hamed? There's the hype right there!

One thing to say he is the most exciting prospect in boxing, which he probably is, and another to say he is the best, which he is not, (I would say). Lacy was one of the most exciting, just like Hamed, but he wasn't one of the best; Hamed was!

Gamboa is the truth, maybe the best P4P combination of speed/power/precision, maybe the best P4P combination thrower, technically sublime. Manny Pacquaio/Marquez can not do what Gamboa does. Gamboas biggest weakness is his height.

Its been a long long time since there has been a prospect with so much potential, think Tyson/Roy Jones/Mayweather

He has potential to be P4P no1 within 2years but he needs to pass his acid test. Larios has been promoted to WBC champ and Gamboa would beat him tomorrow in a 1 sided fight, Chris John won't come out of Indionisia, Linares has more to 130 soGamboa may have to goto 130 to get his acid test or maybe fight Vasquez/R Marquez/Lueverno, I think he dominates both the 122lbers

He was a bit overhyped previously, but since a couple of knockdowns people are overreacting. So overall there has been a balance.

    He will do big things.
