Is Gene Tunney overrted?

    Dmille you are a moron and you are getting put on ignored. Another one bites the dust. Typical brain dead idiot who keeps repeating the same thing over and over again because you want to believe it. Another way I can tell you are a fool. Gene Tunney won 65 fights not 81. You have no clue to what you are talking about and aren't bright enough to check your facts. So he won 65 times as a light heavyweight then later a cruiserweight. And some how that makes him a top 10 heavyweight of all time.

    A drastically shopworn, probably one eyed (according to recent finds by the 1st fight), significantly smaller Harry Greb. When you factor in every disadvantage Greb had against Tunney, it's a feat he could get one nevermind two in the whole session.

    And I agree that Tunney looks skilled and smart on film. But when you put together his size, his style and his tools, that doesn't add up to a highly competitive HW H2H against other ATGs I believe. Some specific styles might suit him but overall, I don't see him doing very well.

    I've always asked myself how a lot of the old time greats would do against modern sized HW's and I can't say for certain. But I don't think it's fair to put them down because they didn't fight many guys as big as todays HW's mostly because there weren't many fighters that big back then. Athletes, like the general population at the time were smaller than the general population and athletes are today. We can only really rate a fighter for what he did in his own time, unless he blatantly avoided a fighter or fighters for reasons such as size, ethnicity, obvious skill descrepancy etc..I'll bet soon we'll be hearing how Ali was overrated because he didn't regularly fight opponents the size of Lennox Lewis or the Klit brothers and that would be absurd. There's a lot more to being a good HW than just size...a lot more.

    Right Gentlemen so apparently every single white guy on this forum has a problem with reading. Again nobody asked you did you need to be Lennox Lewis sized to be a good heavyweight.

    Ali is overrated because his fans act like he couldn't lose when he did lose.

    Ali was a modern sized heavyweight and fought Modern Sized Heavyweights. Also Ali did fight people who were Lennox sized but still was that the question I asked?

    MAYBE IF TYPED IN ALL CAPS WHITE GUYS LIKE YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO READ. GENE TUNNEY WEIGHED 175 POUNDS MOST OF HIS CAREER. ONLY FOUGHT 1 GUY PERIOD WHO WEIGHED 200 POUNDS OR MORE AND THAT GUY WAS 203 POUNDS.

    SO SINCE GENE TUNNEY WASN'T 205 POUNDS OR MORE WHICH IS REQUIRED TO BE A HEAVYWEIGHT NOW AND NEVER FOUGHT ANYBODY WHO WEIGHED 205 POUNDS ORE MORE THEN HOW IS A HEAVYWEIGHT BY MODERN STANDARDS? WHY PUT HIM IN THE TOP 10,20, OR 30 HEAVYWEIGHTS WHEN HE WASN'T A HEAVYWEIGHT.

    BOB FOSTER WAS A LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT AND WHAT HAPPENED WHEN HE FACED REAL HEAVYWEIGHTS? HE GOT KNOCKED OUT.

    I AM ASSUMING THE ONLY REASON WHITES LIKE JANITOR AND GENTLEMAN JIM KEEP DEFENDING GUYS LIKE TUNNEY, MARCIANO AND DEMPSEY ARE BECAUSE THEY ARE WHITE. I KNOW NONE OF THEM WILL SAY BOB FOSTER IS A TOP 10 HEAVYWEIGHT WHICH HE ISN'T BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.

    I SHOULD OF ASKED ONLY BLACKS TO RESPOND OR ANY MORON WHO CAN'T GRASP THAT THEIR ARE WEIGHT CLASSES FOR A REASON TO RESPOND/

    I know. He was still wrecking all kinds of hell up until he died. That's because he was Greb. Doesn't change the fact he fought few careers worth more fights than Tunney, frequently against naturally bigger guys, usually the whole distance (since he didn't have power) on rough fights which were the way he liked them. Remember Greb 1919? That's almost Tunney's entire career up until their first fight in one year. And we're not talking cans here. We're talking Levinsky, Mike Gibbons, Miske, Brennan. You're gonna tell me they fought in the same conditions? In comparison with Tunney? Shopworn.

    Yet this thread still goes on. Maybe the moderator will close this thread. Hopefully they will. Lol now you are talking about Greb winning the middleweight title. That has nothing do with Gene Tunney being a light heavyweight who fought middleweight's/ light heavyweight but yet he is ranked higher than modern heavyweights
