Is Gene Tunney the most underrated Heavyweight champ?

    I am a strong supporter of ranking fighters based on resume, but this is one case where the resume probably doesn't tell the whole story.

    I haven't thoroughly researched his heavyweight resume but, off the top of my head, he has at least 3 decent wins:

    KO12 Tom Gibbons
    W10 Jack Dempsey (the rematch)
    TKO12 Tom Heeney


    * I think his first win against Dempsey is seriously overrated, as Dempsey was coming off a three-year layoff.

    True. Dempsey gets flak for not fighting Greb, so Tunney should get the credit.

    Gibbons was ancient at that point. I think Tunney grown better into the division too. I'm more inclined to agree with janitor though. He was a better fighter than his (padded) record suggests.

    Bingo. And this is the case with most of the illustrious names on Tunney's resume. A lot of people forget that.

    Overrated. Very good fighter, an ATG fighter p4p, but i see guys with him in their top 10 at heavy and **** and that's not reasonable I don't think, based upon what he actually did.

    One of the very best of his era, one of the best for his weight range.
