Foreman is hard to place in many ways.

On the one hand, his opposition is on average the weakest of any ATG.

On the other hand he has the two best wins in the history of the heavyweight divison 20 years apart!

    As in:

    1. Foreman KO Frazier
    2. Foreman KO Moorer
    3. Something else, perhaps Frazier UD Ali or Schmeling KO Louis?

Cool thread a lot of names not around anymore...

I think Foreman is top ten. Not top 5 imo but no real qualms with it. There's a reason that he went beserk/depressed after he lost to Ali and that reason is that he honestly considered himself the most powerful human being on the planet. I think that's a pretty damned scary mindset to have and I mean this in Foreman's favor

The guy was a true badass.

If joe louis retired after the schmeling fight dont you think he could have won the title back in 46-47? with less wear and tear on the clock he would'nt have beat bivens, elmer ray and J.J walcott?

How about Ali? if he retired after the jones fight?

My beef is with comeback george. he did not beat rated fighters then beat moorer who was not the beat HW in the world.

Yes,George's comeback was superbly managed, but nobody can dispute the quality of his resume during his first reign as champion. Taking the title from the previously unbeaten Joe Frazier in such a devastating fashion, and after an easy first defence against Joe Roman, putting the championship on the line against Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali.....:good

Okay,he lost to Ali,but the Ali of 1974 would have beaten many all time prime greats.

Micheal moorer should have stayed at lightheavy or waited until he matured into the higher division rather than evolving 28lb in a matter of months. Moorer had a good and exciting run as a heavyweight all the same but Moorer was but a token stop gap champ at best. An unusual set of circumstances alowed old foreman to gatecrash the title, he was coming off a loss and moorer was only a champ because holyfeild (keeping the title warm for lewis and bowe by a thread) was so poor with that hole in the heart/ cardiac arrest he suposedly had.

Young george paid his dues and was a top ten ATG but old george was no more capable at world level than a lot of other contenders, he was just in the right place at the right time without paying his dues.

I forgot how washed up moore was when he was riding so high and cleaning out the HW top ten whilst still the current LH champ all at the same time. It slipped my mind how low down, tired and worn Walcott looked as the reigning champion fighting like a wild cat for 13 rounds against his #1 contender, how Joe Louis was oh so inactive that he only fought his way to the #1 contender spot again and that Charles was so far over the hill it passed me by that he even knocked out two hot contenders before facing Marciano...
smells like ..because I just said young foreman was a great fighter some muppet (of an unknown color) thinks im a racist? Shame on you.

The biggest problem I have with George Foreman is throughout his career he was allowed to push way too much. Especially against Frazier.. Frazier would of done a lot better if George was called more for the pushing.

He destroyed the two guys who had Ali's number, twice each. At 87 years old he then KOed the guy who had just bested a prime Holyfield.

Being the purest of punchers, he had some trouble with elusive, spoiling boxers(well only 2 of them, one being the GOAT). But anyone else whether it was the mid 70's or the early 90's, they got curb stomped. Foreman is the most dangerous HW of all time

anyway, foreman is underrated by some and overrated by others. he's top 10 lock. top 5 is questionable to me
