Seeing as losses are so damaging to a fighter's reputation these days, I'm really surprised after looking at Johnson's record as to exactly why he's been so deserving in world title shots in three weight divisions for so long. It just looks like he's consistently failed over and over again. I'm sure most people will say it's because he's 'always in entertaining fights', but a lot of others have barely been given a look-in after one loss. Another injustice of the sport?
Because even though he has lost he hasn't really been beaten. It's like how Hopkins has had losses but no one has really beaten. Glenn Johnson arguably won many of the fights he lost and I and others think he has been robbed of winning the title several times.
He's still at the same level he's been for the last few years. Good enough to beat the likes of Allan Green and Yusuf Mack but he'll fall short against the very top guys. Where could he go though? At 168 I'd like to see him in with Dirrell, maybe they'll invite him back to Canada to fight Adonis Stevenson. He could try 175 again, Cleverly, Campillo, Chilemba would be good fights.
Well, he is very very strong and after many of the losses he had we have the feeling that he could have won had he just done so and so... Because he is not that skilled, but he is hard as nails and can keep coming forward and throwing no matter what.. almost.. In his entire career probably only one fighter has reduced him to ruble.. Bute. All the other fights he may have lost fairly and squarely, but he was mostly the strogner fighter in the ring.
If he IS done, I wouldn't be surprised, he has been hit a whole lot and is approaching 43 years old... He is a middle aged man, in a very young mans game...
he probably needs the money, that's why he's still fighting he's just like Toney, doesn't know when to call it quits
Fight Camp 360 takes a look at his financial situation and they are investing the money. Some music stuff.
This is very rarely the reason that former world champions fight on at an older age. This is more the reason some journeyman would continue into his 40s never having seen a big money fight. Guys like RJJ, Holyfield, etc have so many option outside the ring. They choose to fight on, they dont have to for the money.
Undergoing/(recovering from) elbow surgery. Probably retiring if there's any complications with that.
Boxing was young mans game in the past but not today.Look at boxrec ratings:no 1 heavyweight is 36 years old no 2 40 years old,no 1 lightheavyweight 47 years old,no 1 midleweight 37 years old,no 1 welter and pound for puond 33,no 2 is 35,no 1 lightwelterweight is 38 years old and you think boxing is very young men game. With better nutrition, training and medicine fighters can be bettter in their 30s than in their 20 but some people can't realize this things.Once again boxing is not very young men game and stop using this quote because it's not true.
Glen Johnson is a qaulity fighter but like a poster above said he will always be hovering just underneath the elite guys at the top of the tree although his win over Green was enjoyable. I was shocked when i read he was behind on the scorecards when he lost to Green which would of been his biggest robbery recieved had it gone to the cards and for Johnson thats saying something! Id like to see him going out on a couple of wins though.
