Is Glen Johnson the only fighter Calzaghe has ducked?

true.. its not like jones would not take notice of him if he did some **** before.

If he fought ottke which had 2 belts before and unified the titles it would be hard for jones NOT TO TAKE MORE NOTICE OF HIM. You see its like a food chain and jones was the one on top, you have to move up step by step to get to fight the top of the food chain

 

Two points:

1. Joe didn't need Roy, and Roy didn't appear to want any part of Joe. Too much risk for too little reward.


2. Roy would almost certainly have defeated Joe had they met at SMW. Wide UD or even a stoppage.

 

After his injury and the decision to stay at SMW, Calzaghe fought Lacy (WBO +IBF) and Kessler (+WBA, +WBC) for the ture SMW championship instead of fighting Johnson, who at the time was a fighter supposed to be a good step-up opponent with no title - is it ducking? You think he broke his hand only to duck a guy who barely made the top5 at the time at LHW and Joe was so scared that he fought the NO1 (yep, most ranked Lacy as no1 at the time) and the NO2 guy in his division? atsch What an idiot can think that... :-(

 

Ottke wasn't interested in Calzaghe.

His former trainer did an interview with Boxing Monthly (popular UK mag) about six/eight months ago, stating that he would have loved for Ottke to have had a scrap with Joe, but that Sven preferred to remain as IBF champion. Travelling would have been an issue for both, though Joe has fought in Germany before.

If the boot had been on the other foot (Calzaghe ducking Ottke) I wouldn't blame him one bit. Because:

1. Ottke would not travel to fight.
2. We would have seen a robbery ala Robin Reid proportions, perhaps even worse.

 

Many thought that Reid was also robbed vs Calzaghe. :hi:

Calzaghe is a very good fighter, with A level skills. With that said he shouldn't get worried about being rob. Its not like all of ottkes fights were robberies

 

Yeh calzaghe ducked johnson the first time so decided to arrange the fight another two times. Come on, clearly there were reasons.

can't really tell, abraham fought miranda and he was viewed as a big risk at that time. Same as when ottke fought good american fighters like brewer, reid also.

Reid won the fight easy and got shagged - ottke was never at risk in this fight.

The strange thing was the difference in the scores, 116-111, 111-116 etc.

I scored it 115-113 in favour of Calzaghe having seen the fight on tape, no wider than that.

 

reid won the fight making him better than ottke, but got robbed. So if you erase the robbery he is a risk

 

There were no fights in Ottke's career that could be considered risks, because he knew that the referee and judges would always be there to bail him out if necessary.

I can't remember the issue of BM in which an interview was conducted with Ottke's former trainer and mentor with regard the Calzaghe fight, because the trainer seemed rather sad that Ottke refused the chance to be able to prove himself to be definitely the best 168lb'er in the world. He didn't actually say whether he felt that he would win or not.

German boxers are rarely given fights (by promoters - master & servant over there don't forget) that could be considered risks, they are fed chumps to build up padded records before being lambs to the slaughter. The only possible contradiction to this is Felix Sturm, but he daren't go Stateside in fear of having his bank account robbed in addition to his 0 which went on a previous visist - did Daruis Michal whatsisname fight any top liners?
