For being controversial, but not for any positive quality.

I mean, everyone knows that he was dirty, bit people, hit low, caused riots, and quit when things got tough. I guess it is a legacy of sorts.

Btw, which other fighters come to your mind as having the same legacy for a negative quality (controversial)?

Margarito for the hand wraps. although he was a champ, unlike Golata.

    James Butler.

He gave us 2 great fights with Bowe. He effectively dethroned Bowe from having an argument for Heavyweight number1. And he had some good efforts against Ruiz and Byrd. I only watched the Bowe and Ruiz fights out of those

Oh he'll be remembered for retiring Bowe

He was a credible top-10 contender for a number of years. He was usually exciting, and you tuned in because you never knew what was going to happen. He was unfortunate enough to run into a Tyson who was up for the fight and who turned in one his best post-prison performances. Of course he was his own best enemy, but even so, he was a dangerous guy.

I wasn't around then, but I'll remember him for the great fights he gave us. Bowe I & II, Byrd, Grant, Mollo and either Nicholson or Wilson (I forget which but one had an amazing second round) were all really enjoyable fights. His hyperactive aggressive and fragility made him super fun to watch IMO.

What would you regard as consolation for Polish fans for the disappointment of Andy not winning a major title?
    A. Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s UFC success
    B. Andrew Golota’s Olympic Bronze
    C. Just the fact alone Golota is the only Pole to date who fought for a world title at Madison Square Garden
    D. Golota putting Poland on the world boxing map
    E. All of the above

What about for the controversy and dirty fighting? Those boxers are immortalized too in that regard.

Agreed! Andy was the man, the only missing piece was the icing on the cake: a major belt

No. Nobody will be talking about Golota in 250 years time because he was a dirty fighter. There will be 400 years of dirty fighters to talk about and 400 years of legitimately great fighters to talk about.

I'll agree to disagree. Andy took dirty fighting to new heights. I think it was exceptional enough that it will be recounted decades & beyond from now. Among the reasons I feel this way is because the post-fight of Bowe-Golota I (Riot at the Garden) was "Event of the Year" for '96 by Ring Mag. Immortalized already.

Spot on.....and he fought a who"s who...for such a unpredictable loose cannon...he has a lot of good wins...he really deserved the nod vs ruiz and byrd imo...he had the tools to be talked of in tge same breath as lewis and holyfield
