I can't remember too well, but a while ago I think I read something about Golota training in Vero Beach with Buddy McGirt. If that's the case, that gives me a huge reason to pick Mollo to win given Buddy's track record. :-( This content is protected "Andrew, listen to me. You're taking too many shots baby. Don't hit him in the balls repeatedly. And here, take this drink of water."
I met Buddy McGirt and Andrwew Golota last year at the Adamek-Dawson fight. McGirt was training Golota at that time. However, the two split and McGirt was in McBride's corner for the Golota fight. Both men were awesome to be around, and Buddy has a helluva mind for boxing.
From what I know, the two never formally agreed to work together. It was more ore less a hand shake agreement. According to Buddy, he wasn't sure what happened with Golota. He thought he was going to train him and then they just kinda lost contact.
McGirth was supposed to be in corner for Bates fight, but he didn't arrive at all, so Golota dumped him.
Everyone who meets Andrew Golota and gets a chance to talk to him always says the same thing- he is a really cool guy. I've no doubt that Buddy has a lot of boxing knowledge. But for whatever reason, he has proven time and time again that he cannot get the job done as a trainer at the highest level. I mean, I'm not going to rag on him too much for his lack of advice during the actual fight, because what really matters is what goes on during training camp. But how many times does it have to happen before he stops getting all of these top fighters/assignments? Even heavy favorites go into their fights with Buddy as their trainer, and look like ****! i.e. Malignaggi recently against Ngoudgo.
IMO McGirt seems like a good cornerman, even if he's not a great training-camp guy. He always gave really good advice on this series of The Contender, you can't blame him when guys don't take it. When your cornerman/trainer says "pop that jab, don't get hit", he's not telling you to go out and brawl like you need a last-minute KO
Ah, mind telling me your name, sir? Just out of curiosity. Being a good training camp guy is all that really matters, right? On fight night, you just need a cheerleader/calming influence in the corner that you trust who will remind you of basic things that you should be doing, and a competent cut man. Not a good training camp guy = not a good trainer, IMO.
Just random stuff mostly...I posted a thread about it a long time ago....We talked about football, boxing, law school, a little bit about training. It was just kind of amazing. We were walking around the hotel where the Adamek-Dawson weigh ins were gonna be and then we turn this one corner into the little gym that the hotel had and there was Golota and McGirt finishing up work on the mitts. Golota then doing jump rope and calistenics. Like I said both men were real nice guys and were happy to talk to us. Golota though is a little shy at first.
