If belts don't matter then how can a fighter be guaged as "the best"? What if there's a fighter so good, so dominant and devastating, that all the other top fighters scatter like rabbits or turn pale when his name is mentioned? How does THAT fighter get "the good fights"? What does THAT fighter have available to entice, or force, other fighters to face him? Does this hypothetical fighter who might have KO'd 23 guys in a row, have to get old before the other top guys dare face him? It seems so.
Thats the thing with this fight. I like Canelo but to say a win over Canelo puts GGG into ATG status is crazy. Canelos looked spectacular lately but if you look closer at his resume especially recently it makes you pause a bit. Since getting schooled by Floyd hes gone on to beat Angulo TKO, Lara SD, kirkland KO, Cotto UD, Khan KO, Smith KO and Chavez UD. Now if you look closer at his record he lost to the best of this generation whos own resume is lacking, beat a D level punching bag, Lara nothing special, Kirkland who fought 3 times in like 5 years, a blown up WW in Cotto, an out of his league glass jawed Con job, C level Smith and a Chavez whos name has allowed him to even have a career. These are not great wins at all. Canelo has his own legacy to worry about building never mind him being some big feather in GGGs cap. Both these fighter resume is lacking and on Sept 16th theyll be facing the best fighter theyve faced (other than floyd) and we`ll get to see who blinks first.
