He campaigned in the AMs at MW, and began his career at the same weight. His closest contemporary, Andre Ward, campaigned at LHW and began his career as a MW, and STILL hasnt challenged a genuine LHW at the LHW limit. Unlike JCCJr, a natural LHW who began at WW, or Canelo, a SMW who still won't fight at MW, GGG, like Marvin Hagler, is fighting right at his maximum weight class. By skipping the WW and LMW divisions, GGG has scorched through the MW division fighting a host of top 5 MWs, rising contenders, and fringe contenders, along with former Champions and challengers. Now, he's in such a place that others are afraid to campaign at MW for fear they will be back into a corner and forced to fight him, ie Cotto/Canelo. There are a few who MAY have been willing some time ago, but now their stock is rising, ie Lemiuex, Lee, Saunders, NDam.....it may take GGG moving to an unnatural wieght class such as LHW for him to get it on with the #2 of his division.:think
Well he decided to start his pro career in Germany, with Universum as promoter. In retrospect, it was indeed a bad decision. In Europe 160 is a much bigger weight class. In hindsight, coming to USA first to start career and starting at 154 would have been the better move. But hindsight is 20/20 and the business aspects of boxing are hard to predict anyhow.
:thinkYeah....your'e right. Hindsight. And starting with Universum has proven the detriment of so many good fighters. At least with HWs, they don't have to worry about making fights with neighboring weight classes to get the respect they deserve. I honestly think GGG should have started at WW. Had a dozen or so fights in the first 18 months, then moved to LMW to challenge for a title. Even in Europe he coulda worked into a title fight vs the likes of Foreman or Basangurov.:think
Yeah it was a bad decision, he looks like a natural MW now, 168 is tops for him. So if he decides to move up it better be for a good reason.
I agree with those saying he is a natural MW. It's the best place for him to be , whether that's at the beginning or end of his career. Same as Froch at SMW, some people are just perfectly built for a certain division.
Perhaps if he did not stay amateur so long he could have made 154lbs but he did had a hreat amateur which developed the skills he has today so no not the worst decision in modern boxing.
