To be fair he should of got the decision against Mercado and he took that fight on 2 weeks notice and it was at high altitude he didn't have time to acclimatize. In the rematch with a full camp he wrecked Mercado. RJJ was special, he schooled Toney too. Agree about De La Hoya. Jacobs has done nothing to make me think he beats or is even competitive with prime Hopkins.
People are confusing name value with true value. Both Oscar and Tito were not even MW's. Hopkins is incredible but how are people seriously comparing Oscar and Tito to Canelo and Jacobs? Unless I'm missing something, Oscar at MW got KO'd by Hopkins and lost to Sturm (corrupt decision obviously to set up the Hopkins fight). He never looked good at MW and was way better at LMW during those days. Tito was basically the same way. Those guys never had runs at MW and only fought there when they were older. Jacobs is a massive MW and more importantly, a career MW. Canelo is obviously a natural MW and was routinely fighting at 170+ lbs. when he was at LMW. He fought above MW prior to the Golovkin fight. Those guys are better wins than both Oscar and Tito. Of course Oscar and Tito have accomplished way more in boxing though.
Oscar definitely wasn't a middleweight he should of lost to Sturm. I don't rate this as a good win for Hopkins. But Tito did Annihilate Joppy who was a title holder and also Cherifi who was a solid contender and former title holder. Tito proved he was world class at middleweight with those two wins alone. Tito has more wins over genuine world class middleweights than Canelo and Golovkin didn't even beat Canelo.
There are years from the 90s where none of Golovkins opponents would have been one of the 10 best middleweights. A 35 year old Hopkins would also have wrecked, Jacobs and Canelo.
Fair point, I didn't remember the Cherifi fight but do remember Joppy, which was a good win. I don't want to derail this but 80% of the fans, press, boxing world agreed Golovkin won. A small minority called it a draw and a very small minority though Canelo won. As time goes on people will remember this as a poor decision. It's not fake outrage. But to your point, no he did not beat Canelo, that result will always stand unless corruption could be proven, which it wont.
Seems like another boxrec junky comment. Hopkins doesn't control who the WBA makes a mandatory. He was going to be stripped of the WBA title and lose the chance to unify four titles, if he didn't defend against Allen that third time. And the Allen from the first fight might beat all of Golovkins opponents. He was getting in Hopkins **** in the first fight, before Lane pushed Hopkins out of the ring.
I can go with this. Tito should never have been a 3-1 favorite against a full fledged BIG middle though, especially a skilled one like The Executioner !
Not just that, he made 160 comfortably for a decade and a half without ever being drained or failing to make weight. He weighed in at 157 for trinidad at 36 and 156 vs Oscar at almost 40 years old. He was mostly under 170 on fight night. Even at the end of his reign he was only 168 in the ring vs jermain taylor. Taylor, Pavlik and RJJ were all naturally bigger
He speaks pure foolishness. He was 6'1 with short arms. He brings up weight. Hopkins was never a weight bully at 160, then says he was a size bully. lol. None of which makes sense. He wasn't even that athletic, but his skills paid the bills.
Hopkins has the better list of names, more champions, more top ten fighters and most of his wins were very convincing (admittedly so are most of GGG's). Triple G can't really be faulted for that, he's spent most of his career in the States and fought anyone who would fight him, it's just the way it is. GGG still has the chance to significantly improve his resume with rematches against Canelo and Jacobs, Saunders and up comers like Murata and Derevyanchenko. Plus some of the top 154 pounders moving up. I have to say, I do think someone will bump him off before too long though, a near 36 year old with a come forward style usually doesn't age too well.
Why do you refer to them as Welters? Did you miss the part where both reigned at JrMW as well? Hey, at some point in each of tito and DLH's life, they both weighed a mere 100 pounds. Lets just say from now on, Hopkins beat to former 100 pounders. K, babe?
His size and athleticism at 160 makes Jacobs competitive against Hopkins imo, he has skills. I could see Hop tko'ing him late while it being quite close on the cards with Bernard always keeping his nose infront !
