Shields beat dan henderson and dominated him on the ground. Henderson is much bigger than gsp and is a good wrestler himself but shields was able to keep him down and beat him on points. Don't let the kampmann fight fool you. Shields beat okami and condit on the same night. Dude is a beast and trains with cesar gracie.
It makes sense only if you consider how little respect people have for jake shields. If Shields were to be dominated as so many other fighter were by gsp the lack of respect would continue.
Shields is a good fighter if slightly limited/one-dimensional but I just don't think he matches up well against St. Pierre. From what we have seen his wrestling is inferior to St. Pierre's and that weakness will be magnified by the fact that Shields just flat out SUCKS standing. People can talk about that Henderson fight all they want but to me its Brock-Carwin - a flaw was exposed in that first round that a fighter who doesn't gass can exploit. I just see this being like the second Koscheck fight but even more one-sided given Shields' inferior wrestling and lack of knockout power. Shields would have been better off staying at middleweight and challenging Silva - he probably would have lost that too but at least you could see a clear route to victory for him.
Shields a legit grappler. His main strong point is when he gets a hold of you he won't let go. His takedowns are pretty **** technically but he holds onto that leg like an animal that hasn't been neutred.
Thing is, Shields couldn't even get a single take down. Even having St. Pierre on one leg; on three occasions!
People have become so used to GSP being utterly dominant that even in a fight that he may have won all 5 rounds, he is getting trashed. And I'm not saying that some of it isn't deserved, but it's a testament to his abilities that a fighter with a 15 fight win streak couldn't really do much against him.
