He was full bore and and in kill or be killed mode. That applied to Hearns more than Hagler i think but sums up the fight nicely
Neither Basilio or De Marco have Oscar or Shane's skill level. Great brawlers of the Gatti and Ward mold!
A fight of the year is usually defined by one or two great great rounds. How great would Gatti/Ward have been without round 9? Still pretty damn good but no way would it be remember like it is. Of course Haglar/Hearns would have been better it went on longer but it didn't need to, all the elements of an outstanding fight were right there in three rounds.
This "Newb" (What a cringeable ****in word) has been on and around this site for ten years and has watched boxing since the 80's. I LOVE THE FIGHT but think it's a walk over for Hagler! It's not competitive compared to other two way wars! Read more than the thread title!
The first 180 seconds of this fight made it a classic. The best three minutes in the history of boxing.
I would give a fortune to be able to witness such an event live. As someone said, the first 180 seconds were of pure war. You can't ask for anything more than that.
Maybe to give it the modern perspective Floyd v Manny..all the hype plus more...first bell goes...both go after each other trying to finish the fight in the first..thats about as close as it gets Crazy for Hearns to try and stop Hagler but he went for it I do get TG1's point though
Floyd - Manny gets me excited, don't get me wrong. But Hagler - Hearns is different, you know you're going to get blood in such a fight.
well it is so,ewhat overrated, i mean how can it be a spectacular fight if it only lasted 3 rounds, the first round is epic though :hey
What else was he going to do? He tried to box him at times, but he couldn't keep Hagler off of him. As Hearns said "It was there." Hagler was much more aggressive in this fight than in others, because he was probably afraid of Hearns outboxing him, utilizing his reach, and dropping bombs. He neutralized the threat by getting knee deep in it. If he didn't have such a hard head, and such a great chin, he would've lost. Of course, it didn't hurt that Tommy broke his damn hand on his head. If he didn't, we would've seen a different fight. Probably would've been the same outcome, but a different fight for sure.
Yeah Hagler took away Hearns' time and distance, risking massive damage, but it paid off. Hagler was momenterally stunned, weathered the storm, and then destroyed Hearns. They were the days!
Like Marciano said, rolling with a shot is an art, very much like catching a baseball. Hagler catched and tried to roll with Hearns shots, forcing Hearns to throw out of his comfortable range, and successfully smothered most of Hearns power. Even doing it successfully, Hagler was bloodied and smashed up badly after a round.
